The 55 most popular Hindi-Urdu songs of 1976

These include songs released in the previous year

A note about the credits

Who wrote the song Yeh hai Geeta ka gyan for the film Sanyasi? Vishveshvar Sharma, informs an otherwise reliable website. However, Prof. Bhargava writes that it was M.G. Hashmat. Indpaedia cross-checked with all the top argument-settlers, namely Mr. Harmandir Singh ‘Hamraaz’ and SaReGaMa as well as shankarjaikishan.org. All of them agree that it was M.G. Hashmat.

A note about no.12

On CD no. 41 of GCM, Mr Sayani played a version of the song Dil dhoondhtâ hai from the film Mausam that was in the voice of its composer, Madan Mohan. What was interesting was not that Madan Mohan (1924-75) had sung it, for almost all music directors sing their songs while explaining them to their singers. It was the tune. No, it was not the one that we now associate with this song. It was instead the tune of the song Tere liye from the film Veer Zaara (2004), which was made almost 29 years after the composer’s death, but which nevertheless credited Madan Mohan with the music.

Five additional songs with a classical background

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)

Wherever a taal has been mentioned, it is the one verified by ChandraKantha.com, and sometimes the raags, too.
