Ali won a bronze and silver at the World Railway meets in 1981 and ’85 and was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1981. Ali, who grew up in Delhi, is survived by his wife, son and daughter. “During those days, when Daley Thompson was known as the ‘Ironman of Olympics’, Sabir was known as the ‘Ironman of India’. He used to break all the records in decathlon, particularly javelin throw and 110m hurdles.

“He has been a model athlete. He used to train thrice a day. He won the ATF in 1981,” Charles Borromeo, the 800-metre gold medallist at the Delhi Asiad, told TOI.
