A backgrounder

Sutradhar is a caste in India that traditionally worked as carpenters, blacksmiths, and metalworkers. The term "Sutradhar" means "one who holds the thread," which refers to their traditional role in weaving together different parts of wooden or metal structures.

The Sutradhar caste is primarily found in the northern and central regions of India, including in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. They are considered to be a Shudra caste in the Hindu caste system, which is one of the four main castes in traditional Hindu society.

Historically, Sutradhars were highly skilled craftsmen and were often employed by wealthy landowners or kings to construct palaces, temples, and other important buildings. They were also involved in the making of weapons and other metal goods. Over time, some members of the Sutradhar caste have also become involved in other professions, such as teaching, medicine, and politics.
