As in 2023 Aug

Sat Singh TNN, Sep 17, 2023: The Times of India

Rohtak : In a remarkable achievement, 17-year-old Suhana Saini from Rohtak has catapulted to the pinnacle of U-19 girls’ doubles rankings, according to the latest rankings released by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Suhana, who is already the No. 1 U-19 paddler in India, achieved her latest feat in partnership with Bengaluru’s Yashasvi Ghorpade.

Bhawna Saini, Suhana’s mother and a table tennis coach in the Haryana sports department, expressed immense pride in her daughter’s accomplishment. She said Suhana was destined to be a table tennis player, given the family’s strong table tennis background. Both Bhawna and Suhana’s father, Vikas Saini, have held the title of the Haryana TT champion.

Suhana, affectionately called ‘Potu’ by her family, embarked on her table tennis journey at the age of four. Bhawna revealed that her dreams of international stardom had remained unfulfilled, but she hoped that her first child would become an international paddler. The proud mother said she had always wanted a daughter, as she believed a daughter could be easily nurtured and groomed in the sport. Bhawna emphasised her daughter’s fearless spirit and ability to stage remarkable comebacks in tough situations. Suhana’s losses were rare, occurring only when her interest waned. Inspired by Suhana’s achievements, children as young as five and six years are now flocking to table tennis academies, wanting to emulate her success, she said.
