Soalkuchi

Village in the Gauhati subdivision of Kamrup Dis- trict, Eastern Bengal and Assam, situated in 26° 11 N. and 91° 37' E., on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, about 15 miles west of Gauhati town. It is a port of call for the river steamers and an important trading centre, the principal articles of export being silk cloths, jute, and mustard. Unlike most of the Assamese, the people of Soalkuchi have a keen commercial instinct, and act as middlemen and carriers in the mustard trade. The principal commercial castes are the Shau or Shaha, the Dhobi, and the Tanti. The local products include boats and muga silk.
