Siwan Town (or Aliganj Sewan)

Head-quarters of the sub- division of the same name in Saran District, Bengal, situated in 26° 13' N. and 84° 21' E. Population (1901), 15,756. Superior pottery is manufactured here, and the town is noted for its brass- ware. Siwan was constituted a municipality in 1869. The income during the decade ending 190 1-2 averaged Rs. 9,600, and the expenditure Rs. 8,500. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 11,000, mainly derived from a tax on persons (or property tax) ; and the expenditure amounted to the same sum. The town contains the usual public offices ; the sub-jail has accommodation for 32 prisoners.
