The CBI arrested Bengal’s biggest film producer and distributor, Shrikant Mohta, on Thursday for possible involvement in the Rose Valley scam.
Mohta’s arrest capped a day of dramatic developments, with local cops following CBI officials to his office in a Kasba mall and initially asking for “documents” to be shown before “cooperating” with the CBI. The arrest had a political fallout as well, with Trinamool Congress accusing the Centre of using the CBI to “browbeat everyone”, and all three of Bengal’s opposition parties — BJP, Congress and CPM — questioning Trinamool’s links with the producer-distributor.
Mohta is likely to be flown to Bhubaneshwar where he will be produced before a special CBI magistrate. The co-founder of Shree Venkatesh Films (SVF), Bengal’s most successful movie-making firm, has produced over 120 films, including critically acclaimed and commercial hits like ‘Chokher Bali’, ‘Raincoat’, ‘Autograph’ and ‘Memories in March’.
Around 10 CBI officers landed at SVF office around 11.30 am on Thursday. But they first met resistance from Mohta’s personal guards and then Kasba police, CBI officials said, adding that the cops refused to leave even after being shown court orders and documents. They insisted on a formal “CBI requisition slip to carry out searches in their police station area”, CBI officials said. Kasba police officials, however, said they went by the law. “We received a call from Mohta’s office, saying unidentified people were claiming to be CBI officers and seeking entry,” an officer said.
The CBI announced Mohta’s arrest within an hour of taking him to their Salt Lake office. Mohta was not cooperating with them and refusing to answer questions, they said; and at other times his statements did not match with the seized evidence.
