Shah Rukh Khan is…

Born 2 November 1965

After being the no.1 (highest paid) star in India for years, SRK was named the 8th highest paid actor in the world (and the highest paid in India) in August 2016, according to Forbes. Shah Rukh did not feature in the illustrious Forbes list in 2015.

This caused surprise in India because at the Indian—and not just Hindi-Urdu—box office Salman Khan had been no.1 since 2014 {beating SRK by a whisker}, 2015 and 2016 {beating SRK by a wide margin in both years}).

When asked Forbes to comment, they said that Shah Rukh Khan continued to rule not only through his box office collections with the lead role in the hit film 'Dilwale' and many others, but also earning multi-million-dollar upfront fees and a cut of the back-end for his efforts. He also cashes in on endorsement deals for dozens of brands most Americans have likely never heard of.

How SRK's parents met

How SRK’s Pathan father fell in love with his South Indian mother

Priya Gupta, TNN | Aug 4, 2013 [1]

Shah Rukh talks about how his Pathan father fell in love with his South Indian mother.

"My mother is from Andhra and lived in Karnataka and used to speak all four South languages. My grandfather was the Karnataka state chief engineer of Mangalore Port and was the first Oxford- educated engineer, who was highly respected. He designed and built the Mangalore Port. My grandfather once took his four daughters, eldest of whom was my mother, to Delhi for a visit. In those days, there were pillars at India Gate. They had an ice-cream in their car after which the car hit one of the pillars and overturned. My father was the cousin brother of General Shah Nawaz, who was the second-in-command to Subhash Chandra Bose (Mangal, Dhillon and Shah Nawaz were amongst the three biggest freedom fighters). My father and he were Pathans from Peshawar and would walk at India Gate in the evenings. Seeing the car overturned, they turned the car over and took my mother and her family to the hospital. My grandfather and my mother's three sisters became alright, but my mother lost her memory and needed matching blood. As luck would have it, my father's blood matched hers and he gave his blood to her. My grandmother (nani) surprisingly was pregnant at that time and thus, to not give her stress on the phone, my grandfather requested my father if he would go to Bangalore to give her the news about her family and my mother having lost her memory (a Pathan will often do that as my mom's family had no help in Delhi).

‘When he returned back from Bangalore, he would go everyday and look after this lady who had lost her memory and fell in love with her. My mom, coincidentally, was engaged at that time to someone else. He came to Bangalore and wanted to marry my mother. They were both Muslims and my grandparents agreed. I was born and brought up in Mangalore till the age of five. There were no men in my maternal side except my grandfather. My mother was the eldest daughter and my mausies had got married late. I, too, had an older sister, so I became the first boy in the family and my mom gave me for five years to be looked after by my grandmother, so I was brought up in Mangalore by my maternal aunts and my nani. In the fifth year, I think, she missed me a lot and took me back with her. So, I was brought up by women and spoke Kannada when I was small with the servants of the house. My maternal house is still in Toli Chowki, Hyderabad."

Is SRK’s wife Gauri a drug addict?

The Times of India

The Times of India reports: According to gossipmongers, Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan is a drug addict. She is one of the many Bollywood celebrities, who have been caught at airports carrying drugs.

AbRam’s paternity

Shah Rukh Khan opens up about rumours of AbRam being eldest son Aryan's love-child | IndiaTimes/ The Times of India

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan became parents for a third time [in 2013], when they welcomed a baby boy - AbRam, via surrogacy. Despite the fact that the toddler shared an uncanny resemblance with his daddy SRK, it appeared that many couldn't quite embrace this surprise birth announcement. Rumour mills were abuzz that AbRam was the love-child of the then 15-year-old Aryan Khan and a Romanian girl.

Shah Rukh touched upon this unfounded gossip for the first time at his recently held TED Talk and completely shut them down. He said, “Four years ago, my lovely wife Gauri and me decided to have a third child. It was claimed on the net that this child was the love child of our first child, Aryan Khan, who was 15 years old. Apparently, he had sowed his wild oats with a girl while driving his car in Romania. And yeah there was a fake video to go with it. And we were so disturbed as a family. My son who is 19 now, even when you say hello to him he says, ‘But bro, I didn’t even have a European driving license’.”

The ‘Raees’ star ended the chatter around the rumour by saying, “Yeah, in this new world, reality slowly became virtual and virtual became real and I began to realise I cannot say what I thought. And humanity at this time completely identified with me.”

Personal glimpses

A

Oct 11, 2023: The Times of India

For Alka Kacker, the economics batch of 1988 at Delhi University’s Hansraj College (where she taught Public Finance and Indian Economics) will always be special. It was the first batch of students she taught and the first batch always holds a special place in a teacher’s heart. Kacker, now vice-principal of the college where she has been teaching economics for the last 35 years, did not know back then that there would be another reason for this batch to be unique – superstar Shah Rukh Khan, enrolled in the college from 1985 to 1988, happened to be part of that first batch, and what’s more he was the topper.Topper, passionate about sportsShe recalls smilingly that he was passionate about sports. "He used to sit in class with his hockey stick always by his side. I remember him as bright and respectful. He kept a small diary in which he would write answers to questions expected in the exam and would request me to check them," she says.

At a ceremony to collect his award as the batch topper, "I was amazed at the way the girls were swooning over him during the function. I knew that he had starred in the TV series Fauji but had no idea of his huge fan following already," she recalls.Years later, during a flight to London, she happened to come across a a big feature on SRK in the in-flight magazine. "That is when I realised he was now a huge Bollywood star. By then his hit film Baazigar had been released," she says. A few years ago, Kacker says SRK visited his alma mater Hansraj College to promote his film Fan and to collect his degree which he had never collected. She says the crowd went hysterical. Standing atop rooftops and trees, they just kept piling into the college to catch a glimpse of the superstar.

SK Laroiya, who also used to be a professor at Hansraj College, taught SRK Economic Policy. “He was a bright student who submitted his assignments on time. He secured a first division which was not easy in economics in those days,” recalls the retired professor. ‘Good spirits’ despite injurySavita Kochar, who was head of the physical education department at Hans Raj, recalls the time SRK got hurt on the eye. During a hockey match being played at Delhi’s Khalsa College, SRK was the centre-forward. When he tried to score a goal, the opposing team’s player accidentally hit him near the eye. Kochar rushed with first aid and treated his injury. It was thankfully not a major injury and although their college lost the match, SRK was in “good spirits”.Did she see Chak De! India in which her former student played the role of a coach for the women’s Indian hockey team? “Yes! And I really liked Shah Rukh’s role in that. He was very good with dribbling and running,’’ she says. “Overall, his personality left an impact as he was always cheerful, social, smart and handsome. He used to hang with friends near the canteen whenever he was free and with his dimples and ‘josh’ for activities in college, he always stood out,” she recalls.

“Did impressions of Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan”A college junior, requesting anonymity, says, “Shah Rukh was special even in college. His persona, clarity of thought and willingness to help everyone made him stand out. At our Fresher’s Welcome, he went up on stage and did impressions of Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan.”At 18, this college junior was in awe of his senior and not without reason. Recalling a visit to a professor’s house when SRK also happened to be there, the junior says, “He [SRK] gave us an elder brother vibe and tips on how to study for the exams.”The junior recalls another interaction with the star. “Third-year final exams were round the corner. SRK was busy practicing theatre as part of the Theatre Action Group [under the mentorship of theatre director Barry John]. Third year was really tough and here was this guy busy with theatre. But he told me‘ Yeh sab to chalta rahega, par class mein top to main hi karunga [Theatre practice will go on, but I will only top the class]’. Such was his confidence.”

Kaushik Rudra, managing director of a private sector bank and a Hansraj College batchmate, says even back then, SRK’s acting talent was obvious. “He skillfully mimicked actors like Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand at college functions. When he went up on stage and performed, that is when we realised there was some serious talent here.”Wooing GauriGauri Khan, his wife, was his girlfriend back then. She studied in Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College). Several people recall him waiting for hours for Gauri outside her college.Shivani Wazir Pasricha, actor, presenter and director of The Study School and Gauri’s long-time friend, says, “Gauri introduced me to Shah Rukh at a mela at [Delhi’s] Panchsheel Park and we hit it off amazingly.” She adds, “Shah Rukh is born to win and to charm. Even when we were in our teens, whatever he wanted to achieve, he achieved. And he was always very generous and that’s the reason for his continuous success Whether it's his driver, his executive assistant, friend – he is always very giving. Even photographers who are often overlooked at events – SRK has gifted them cameras. Inclusivity has been his way of thinking and that's what makes people want to do their best for him. And ofcourse he is very focused. He thinks nothing of going without sleep and he really enjoys what he does.”

Diving for the fun of it

Rudra remembers SRK as “a very decent guy, all rounder, popular with everyone and perhaps a tad shy”. “He was very bubbly on the hockey field and I remember him diving on the astroturf grass in the National Stadium. Astroturf was new for all of us and Shah Rukh would not worry about scraping his skin or grazing his elbows – he just dived on the turf for the fun of it,” he says. They would hang around at Delhi's Bhikaji Cama Place, photocopying notes from seniors and have competitions on who could drink the maximum soft drinks. A throbbing zest for life, confident, cheerful and a desire to help others – that’s the common thread running through these glimpses of his college life from his teachers, batchmates and friends.

5 amazing aspects of Shah Rukh’s life you may not be aware of

The Times of India

Bollywood's King Khan whose 'Chennai Express' overhauled and swamped the Rs 100 crore club, once tried his hand at a small restaurant business in Dariya Ganj but couldn't succeed. Surprisingly, his first salary was Rs 50 which he earned by working as an usher at Pankaj Udhas's concert in Delhi. When he signed 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' as an actor, he completed the entire film for Rs. 25,000 only. Even on the opening day, he sold this film's tickets at the booking window of a Mumbai cinema! SRK is scared of poverty as his parents died in debt.

Actor Vivek Vaswani is known as SRK's mentor in Bollywood. During his struggling days, Shah Rukh had no place to stay in Mumbai so he lived with Vivek, who later helped him to meet industry people and helped him to get into Yash Chopra’s camp. According to Vivek, he tried his best to push SRK out of his house but failed. However, he says whatever he may have done for him in the past, he did as a friend. “You do things for friends, simple, and hence it was nothing really too great. Anyone would have done what I did. I am proud to be his friend,” stated Vivek once in an interview.

Shah Rukh rose to fame by playing negative characters in [two of] his earlier films and even inspired his peers to play anti-hero roles. Interestingly, when ‘Baazigar’ released, everyone discouraged him saying that his career is over now in the industry. “Even my best well wishers told me you can’t be a hero again since you’ve killed a woman. But it paid off. In the long run, everything is sustainable, if you stick to it,” said Shah Rukh. No doubt, the film left many Indian viewers shocked because it didn't adhere to the typical Bollywood formula. Nonetheless, the film raked in huge moolah and SRK again came out a winner.

Shah Rukh is very particular about his fashion and lifestyle. Known for having a classy sense of style, he prefers wearing black. “It's easier since no one can tell if I am repeating a garment. I have a fetish about the fit of my jeans and the clothes I sleep in. They have to be of a certain material. Also, as soon as I have worn my jeans after a bath, I wear my shoes and socks. I don’t take them off till I am in bed. I never wear slippers. My feet should always be covered. Sometimes even when I am lying on the bed, I wear shoes.” He likes to match his socks with his shoes not with his trousers. He even makes sure that his pyjamas are freshly ironed every night because as he says you never know who you might meet in your dreams!

Shah Rukh has a great fetish for numerology. All of his cars have the registered number 555 as he is very superstitious about it and believes it brings him good luck. Even his personal email id also contains the number 555. Not only do his personal mobile numbers have the combination of 555 and 40 but wife Gauri and all the senior officials working for him have either or both of these numerals as a part of their numbers!

Films that clashed with SRK starrers

The past victims of Shah Rukh Khan clashes

Anand Vaishnav, Indiatimes | Aug 24, 2013

The Times of India

It is never a wise decision to release your film alongside an SRK flick. Don't believe us? Ask Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sajid Nadiadwala!

Ekta Kapoor is the latest victim of marketing guru Khan's unmatched promotional skills and ability to sense the pulse of the public; as the much-hyped EID clash ended up being a one horse race.

Despite a massive pre-release marketing campaign, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaraa could not pass the box office test and was completely run over by the pace of Chennai Express. And while Ekta may go around town crying foul, history shows that when it comes to a box office clash, SRK will go all-out to make sure his film delivers and is the first choice of cinegoers all over the world. Fans too have always responded in huge numbers by supporting SRK's releases in a clash. And a clash seems to bring out the best in SRK's creativity as well.

Here's a look at some past examples when rival releases had to bow down to the King!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai/Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) - Even though Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda's combo under the direction of David Dhawan was the front runner among trade gurus, Karan Johar's debut film eventually had the last laugh. The risk of casting lover-boy SRK as the father of an eight-year-old worked, and team KKHH laughed away to the bank by making fans smile and cry in equal measure.

(In the event Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was the year's no.1 hit and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan the no.2 hit.)

Mohabbatein/Mission Kashmir (2000) - This film came at a time when SRK's stardom was being seriously challenged by Hrithik Roshan. However a disappointing screenplay and an underwritten part for Roshan lost out to the magic of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, with ample support from a terrific comeback by Big B and a surprise cameo by Aishwarya Rai. Ironically Mission Kashmir was first planned with the Mohabbatein duo!

Don/Jaan E Mann (2006) - Despite the lavish canvas and good music, fans chose SRK's modern day take on Amitabh Bachchan's Don and gave him yet another Diwali blockbuster.

Om Shanti Om/ Saawariya (2007) - This was a clash that made history. Even though Sanjay Leela Bhansali had the backing of a Hollywood studio, his Devdas actor redefined the rules of movie marketing with his promotional blitzkrieg for Om Shanti Om. And as expected, OSO knocked Saawariya out of the race even before the first day ended.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan/Son Of Sardaar (2012) - This battle turned rather ugly, with Ajay Dvegn's banner clashing with YRF over charges of foul play and monopolistic practices. And while fans turned up in big numbers for both film, Yash Chopra's last venture sustained much longer than SOS.

Controversies

2010-13

Shah Rukh Khan's seven famous controversies: 2010-13

The Times of India

Though Ekta shifted the release of her flick "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara!" to get at least 2000 halls across the country, "Chennai Express" producers later backed out to provide sufficient screens to run the movie. Ekta later came to know that it all happened because of Shah Rukh's decision. The end result was that her film ended up opening on just 1600 screens; a limited release for a movie which was reportedly made at a budget of Rs 85 crore. To add to Ekta's woes, these halls were even small ones which in turn had an adverse effect on film's opening day collection.

When Shah Rukh and wife Gauri decided to have a third child through surrogacy, the actor faced charges of sex determination. Incidentally, he was in London with his family at that moment when rumours started spreading as there are laws that prohibit sex determination tests. Even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) investigated the matter after the reports but recently the corporation informed the Bombay High Court that the superstar was wrongly charged for conducting pre-birth sex determination tests of their surrogate son AbRam.

At an Iftar party, arch rivals Shah Rukh and Salman hugged each other to end their five years of bitter enmity, which started at actress Katrina Kaif's birthday party in the year 2008. However, Salman's absence at Mannat and later his statement to break SRK's "Chennai Express" records clearly indicate that Salman is still in no mood to forget the bitterness between the two. Similarly, Aamir and Ajay Devgn also seem in no hurry to forgive the actor for his misdemeanor and often avoid him during events. Aamir was not happy with the way Shah Rukh portrayed him during awards and events. After the "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" vs "Son of Sardaar" debacle, Ajay Devgn too was not on friendly terms with him and even offered his help to Ekta Kapoor after the producer was miffed with Shah Rukh.

Hafiz Saeed's invitation to Pakistan The actor landed in a controversy after his interview to a politico-socio journal in which he stated that sometimes he becomes an inadvertent object of political leaders. To which Lashkar-E-Taiba founder and one of the most wanted terrorists Hafiz Saeed said that Shah Rukh is welcome in Pakistan and he can live here for as long as he wants. He also said that he will be respected in Pakistan. After Hafiz, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik also asked Indian government to provide security to superstar Shah Rukh Khan following the latter's remarks on being a Muslim in India. However, later Shah Rukh and Indian govt. condemned their statements.

For his alleged misbehaviour at the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials not only lodged a police complaint against him but also decided to ban him for life from entering the MCA premises. Shah Rukh, a Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner, was involved in a fracas with the security staff and officials of the cricket body following KKR's victory over MI on May 16, 2012. The actor however denied any misconduct and said he reacted only after children, including his kids, were "manhandled" by the stadium's security staff.

When Shah Rukh was linked to actress Priyanka Chopra , it was quite a surprise for everyone as the actor was a family man and an ideal father. A picture of Priyanka and Shah Rukh sparked the rumours when the former went to visit him at his office at three in the morning. This raised lot of eyebrows and speculations. Even Priyanka was accused of being a home-breaker and her closeness with SRK irked wife Gauri Khan. It was reported that Gauri started avoiding Priyanka and was even snubbed by Gauri when on an event she went to greet her. However, SRK never responded to any of these reports and maintained a stoic silence.

Shah Rukh allegedly assaulted Farah Khan's husband and filmmaker Shirish Kunder at Sanjay Dutt's "Agneepath" bash over his comment on the failure of- "RA.One". Farah Khan sent an sms to reporters saying: "Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way 2 sort out a problem, n that its means the person who's hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on, n it saddens me 2 see him doing the same (sic)." However, the truce happened after Shirish and Farah, along with the latter's brother Sajid Khan and their common friend Sajid Nadiadwala, went to SRK's home, Mannat. Shah Rukh is shooting for Farah's "Happy New Year" these days.

2021: Son Aryan framed in false drug case

Rajshekhar Jha, May 28, 2022: The Times of India

New Delhi: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has given a clean chit to Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, 24, who was arrested in connection with seizure of drugs from some passengers aboard a cruise ship last year and had spent 27 days behind bars.

In a chargesheet against 14 suspects in the court of special judge for NDPS cases, Greater Mumbai, two days before its 60-day extension to file the report was to end, NCB didn’t press charges against Aryan and five others.

Apart from lack of evidence, the clean chit comes against the backdrop of the SIT's probe, which has raised serious questions over his arrest. SIT's findings, which sources confir- med were part of the chargesheet, suggest that Khan may have been falsely implicated.

In its internal report, the SIT said: “It appeared that the investigating officer was so- mehow motivated to implicate Aryan Khan in the drug case. ”

During analysis of the voluntary statements given by Aryan and Arbaaz Merchant, the SIT found in none of his statements had Merchant claimed that the six-gram charas recovered from his possession was meant for Aryan.

LINK WITH INT’L DRUG CHAIN, AGENCY HAD ALLEGED

What NCB Said No drugs recovered from Aryan Khan. No concrete evidence to show role in conspiracy with Arbaaz Merchant or other accused h Arbaaz never said the 6g charas recovered from him was meant for Aryan’s consumption. On November 6, 2021, Arbaaz said he was warned by Aryan to not carry drugs on cruise h In his statements, Aryan never accepted that recovered charas was meant for him h No phone chat connects him to the present case It Had Earlier Claimed h Prosecutor told sessions court Aryan & Arbaaz travelled together with ‘common intent’. Khan procured from Arbaaz.

In its remand application seeking custody on Oct 4, NCB said it had found Aryan’s links with ‘int’l drug trafficking chain’ via mobile chats, pictures etc.

In voluntary statements, both disclosed they were carrying drugs for their consumption Aryan spent 27 days in custody, was denied bail twice. NDPS court cited voluntary statements to say he acted in conspiracy; sessions court said he had knowledge of contraband recovered from Arbaaz

Shahrukh Khan's top 5 fights The Times of India

vs. Salman Khan

See Shah Rukh Khan vs. Salman Khan: the cold war

vs. Mumbai Cricket Association

Shahrukh Khan and MCA officials- Shahrukh Khan, the owner of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders got into a brawl with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials in 2012 where his team was playing at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The commotion erupted when MCA officials accused SRK of abusing them and allegedly being drunk and misbehaving with the guards but the badhshah of Bollywood denied this. SRK was upset when his kids were manhandled by the guards and that is why he abused them, which he went on record to say in an interview to a certain section of the media. Shahrukh had taken his children and 40 adults to watch the match when he lost his cool after his daughter was allegedly manhandled. With this fight between SRK and the MCA officials, Sharukh has been banned from Wankehede Stadium for five years. An FIR was also lodged against the actor and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla was to intervene to play peacemaker between the MCA officials and SRK.

vs. Shirish Kunder

Shahrukh Khan and Shirish Kunder- This was the famous fight that took place in January 2012, after the Filmfare Awards. A success party for Agneepath was thrown at Mumbai's posh club which was attended by A-Listers, including Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. SRK seemed to be in a good mood as he entered the party at 3.15 am on 31st January 2012 and was seen hitting the dance floor. His good friend Farah Khan's husband Shirish Kunder seemed to apparently hover around the superstar and annoy him by following him everywhere. Shahrukh apparently ignored Shirish throughout but the latter did not give up. this irked the badshah of Bollywood who allegedly pinned Shirish to the sofa and slapped him. Farah and SRK have worked together on films and given blockbusters. SRK was apparently miffed with Shirish when he tweeted, "I just heard a Rs150 crore firework fizzle". He was apparently referring to SRK's Ra. One. Farah apparently even went on record to say that her husband was unaware of SRK's presence and he did nothing to provoke him. In a mass sms sent to the media, Farah said: "Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way to sort out a problem. It means the attacker has either a personal or professional crisis going on. It saddens me to see him doing the same." But as they say, no enmity or friendships are permanent in Bollywood, Farah and SRK patched up and the he is doing her film Happy New Year.

vs. Ajay Devgn

Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn- Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn were never the best of friends in spite of the latter's wife Kajol sharing a great rapport with SRK. In fact, Kajol and Shahrukh have done several films together including the blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenege. But things got ugly between Ajay and SRK when the release date of their 2012 films- Jab Tak Hain Jaan (JTHJ) and Son of Sardaar (SOS) clashed. Both were slated for a Diwali release and Ajay Devgn claimed that SRK had booked majority of theatre screens for his film which did not give a fair chance to Devgn's Son of Sardaar. Ajay was tangled in a legal battle with YRF banner which produced SRK's film. Devgn took his complaint to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) stating that there were not enough single screens for his Son Of Sardaar. SRK in turn allegedly snapped ties with Eros International for allegedly releasing SOS on the same date as JTHJ.YRF reacted by not inviting Kajol to the premiere of JTHJ in spite of Kajol being a YRF loyalist. In an interview to Filmfare where he was asked about the battle with SRK and his stance, Ajay was quoted saying, "We can’t back out now. As for me, I don’t even want to turn back because I believe I’m fighting against a wrong practice. If we win the case, it will be good for the industry. And the authority with which we have lodged the case, the CCI, doesn’t allow a case to be withdrawn". Adding in the same interview, (on his equation with SRK), "Personally, we have no problem, no tension, no issues and nothing to do with each other. When we meet, which is rare, we are cordial. We are colleagues and we equally care about everyone in the industry".

vs. Balaji Motion Pictures

Shahrukh Khan and Balaji Motion Pictures- Shahrukh Khan once again found himself in a fight that was brewing between him for his film Chennai Express and Balaji Motion Pictures' Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara! Again producer Shobha Kapoor (Ekta's mom) was unhappy with the number of screens allotted to their film OUATIMD. While both the films were slated for an Eid release in August 2013, the makers of OUATIMD pushed their film a week later, (15th August Independence Day), in order to avoid a clash and do good business at the box office. While SRK postponed his release date by a day (from 8th August to 9th), Milan Luthria completely backed off. In an interview to TOI, Milan Luthria clarified his stance, "Talking about this development and putting to rest all media speculations about the duo's rapport, Milan says, "Two big films like Chennai Express and OUATIM Dobaara! releasing together was a tough ask. We announced our release date first but took a step back because we did not want to get into an ego issue, a war that the media would enjoy. I told Shahrukh that lets think with cool minds. We discussed how many screens we would need to showcase our films. It was a sensible move as another holiday happened to follow after Eid and that was Independence Day. It was a golden opportunity to move away and we cashed on it. It was a good solution for both and I'm happy that I had a word with SRK before taking a decision".

Awards

The Times of India

Shahrukh Khan is probably the recipient of the maximum number of awards in Bollywood. Here’s a look at his achievements through awards and honours.

Shahrukh Khan has won many National Awards including the Best Indian Citizen Award (1997), Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in the Field of Entertainment (in 2002), the Padma Shri which is India's fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India ( in 2005). He is also among the 10 recipients of the IIFA-FICCI Frames Awards for the "Most Powerful Entertainer of the Decade and the Global Entertainment and Media personality Award at FICCI Frames 2010 Excellence awards (2010).

Shahrukh Khan has been a favourite at the Filmfare Awards that are held annually in Mumbai. From hosting them to walking away with the black lady, SRK perhaps has more Filmfare awards than his contemporaries. Shahrukh won his first Filmfare way back in 1993 for Best Newcomer and has continued the tradition over the years. Films like My Name Is Khan, Chak De! India, Swades: We, the People, Devdas brought him great acclaim and the badshah walked away with the coveted title.

Madame Tussaud’s is known to immortalize celebrities in wax by casting their exact impressions and putting these wax figures on display at the museum’s London branch. Along with Bollywood celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, SRK’s wax statue was unveiled at Madame Tussauds (London) in 2007 and subsequent versions were installed at Madame Tussauds museums in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and New York in 2010. But that's not all! Another statue of SRK'S was installed at the Musée Grévin in Paris IN the same year (2007). During the same year, he was accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award by the French government for his exceptional career. The same year, Khan was also conferred with the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka which carries the honorable Datuk.

10 ways how Shah Rukh Khan makes money

By Pritika Ghura The Times of India

Bollywood's badshah Shah Rukh Khan has been named as the second richest actor in the world. In fact, Shah Rukh has beaten Hollywood biggies like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood or Adam Sandler in terms of wealth and status. A report in Wealth-X has estimated SRK to be worth $600 million. Not only is he a great actor, producer, TV host but is also a co-owner of an IPL cricket team. He is sharp, intelligent and has an excellent business sense. Be it movies or endorsements or business venture, whatever SRK touches becomes gold. Let us go through ways which has helped SRK make money.

Innovative ideas: When a new movie is to be released, promotional activities take a huge chunk of the budget. Be it city-to-city press conferences or launch parties, these promotional activities are very important for the film’s success. But what if the campaign can be tapped to get massive returns? That's exactly what Shah Rukh Khan has in mind for his next home production, Happy New Year, which is gearing up for a big Diwali release. A Mumbai Mirror report says that instead of asking the cast of the movie to give interviews and shoot pictures, SRK had a new game-plan in mind. He conducted worldwide shows with the film's cast, including Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani, ahead of the film's release. Called Slam! The Tour, SRK and his team performed in the US and UK. The organisers and promoters of the 'SLAM! The Tour' cashed in on the hype and each show was reportedly estimated to make around seven crore. A Mumbai Mirror report dated July 3 has estimated that these shows will make Rs 200 crore even before the film releases in the theatres.

High-profile endorsements: From endorsing cold drinks to talcum powder, from endorsing cars to fairness creams, no one can beat Shah Rukh Khan in the advertisement world. The superstar bagged a 20 crore worth endorsement deal with a pan masala brand sometime ago. This is touted to be one of the highest endorsement deals signed by a Bollywood actor. In fact, King Khan endorses so many brands that he has created his own ‘Brand SRK’. He is very popular in the endorsement world as he is able to connect with both classes as well as the masses. His easy charm, personality, box-office success and good looks make him a favourite in the advertisement world. Also his self-made man image makes him more attractive.

Selling satellite rights: Shah Rukh Khan is a smart filmmaker. He knows that there is a huge audience that cannot afford to watch movies in the multiplex. However, if it gets telecast on TV there is no way they will ignore it. Though SRK’s latest release Chennai Express did extremely well at the box-office, SRK sold satellite rights of the film to Zee Entertainment at Rs 48 crore. In fact, a TOI report says that the filmmakers had a deal with the channel that if it crosses the 100 crore mark, they will get more money for selling the rights. Interestingly, this was the first time ever that a film's satellite rights were sold with such a pre-condition. Quoting a source, the report adds that SRK was involved with very area of the film's marketing and branding.

Performing in weddings: It is not easy to make King Khan dance and no one knows that better than industrialists or politicians who pay Shah Rukh Khan in crores to make him perform in their family weddings. A Mumbai Mirror report says that King Khan charges about USD 15,000 for an appearance and close to Rs 8 crore for a wedding performance. In fact, these reports emerged when the actor gave a 30-minute performance at a high-profile wedding in Dubai last year. It is said that SRK enjoys a monopoly of sorts as Salman Khan is advised not to dance given his health conditions and Aamir and Saif don’t like to perform. Hence, he gets the price he demands. Apparently the Mirror report says that he received around 250 invites for wedding appearances or performances in 2012 but took up only 10 of them. That means he can easily make Rs 80 crore in a year by just performing in high-profile weddings.

Marketing strategies: When it comes to movie promotions and marketing strategies, Shah Rukh Khan is unbeatable. And this has been proved by the stupendous success of his movie Chennai Express. In fact, he is credited for introducing the concept of a huge promotional campaign before and after the release of a film. So doing city tours, attending press conferences, coming on TV reality shows, SRK does it all. In fact, reports suggest that it was SRK’s idea to give one Chennai Express ticket free with every two tickets purchased in Delhi. He also took advantage of the hype around the movie and increased the price of ticket before the release of the film. Even a hike of Rs 10 per ticket can have huge impact on the overall collection of a film.

Smart investments: Shah Rukh Khan has value for money and believes in investing his money smartly. The superstar has smartly invested his money in properties across the world, an IPL team and a production house Red Chilli Entertainment. A Mid-Day report says King Khan has invested in Imagination Edutainment India Pvt Ltd, which is a local franchisee of KidZania, a global chain of indoor theme parks for children. By making smart investments, SRK knows he will only get higher returns and be able to double his money.

Sharing profit percentage: Though Shah Rukh Khan is not the only actor who demands a percentage of the profits of a film, he is one of the first few actors who started this trend. So while Aamir reportedly claimed 33 percent of the profits for YRF's Dhoom 3, Shah Rukh Khan makes more. A TOI report said that King Khan also has a large share in the profits of Vishal Bhardwaj's film, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Rumour has it that he has at least a 60 percent share.

TV shows: You will be surprised to know that Shah Rukh Khan, who started his career with TV soaps Fauji and Circus, is among the highest paid actors of TV as well. After ruling the box-office, SRK again made a foray into television as the host of three reality shows- Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 3, Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain? and Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout. However, SRK's fee went up with each show. A TOI report says that in 2011, he charged 2.5 crores for Zor Ka Jhatka..., an Indian adaptation of the American reality show Wipeout. With this kind of money, no wonder SRK is indeed the richest actor of India.

Have a thirst for knowledge: Shah Rukh Khan has a huge appetite for knowledge and loves to read. He is among the most updated and informed actors of the film industry. His study is littered with books of all genres and makes it a point to stay abreast of the latest news as well as gain knowledge from books. Another thing that keeps him focused is that he loves his job and puts in utmost dedication and hard work. Hence, it is his passion, thirst of knowledge and dedication that makes SRK the top most star of the country and hence makes him equipped to earn a lot of money.
