Introduction

The Times of India, May 20, 2016

Quite contrary to what Sonowal is pitching himself as, which is 'Sakalore Ananda Sarbananda' - which means, 'Everyone's Happiness is Sarbananda' - the bachelor is known to be quite a firebrand.

Since his student days, Sonowal has been vocal on the illegal migrants issue.

Sonowal began his political career with the All Assam Students Union (AASU), which eventually became the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

Sonowal joined the AGP in 2001. That year, he won the Assembly seat from Moran.

In 2004, he became the AGP's Parliamentarian from the Dibrugarh constituency.

Sonowal severed ties with the AGP in 2011 after he became disillusioned with the various factions within the party.

The Orissa-born Sonowal joined the BJP in 2011.

In January 2016, BJP parliamentary board announced Sarbananda Sonowal as party's CM candidate for Assam.

"The people of Assam have accepted our winning combination. This is going to be a great victory," the BJP's chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal said after election results.
