IIT-BHU removes Pandey as lecturer

The Times of India Jan 07 2016

A row erupted on Wednesday following IITBHU's decision to remove social activist and Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey from its guest faculty .While IIT-BHU has charged Pandey with involvement in “unwanted activities“, the activist claims R S S is behind his ouster. Pandey was a visiting faculty member in the mechanical engineering department.

“The IIT-BHU administration issued a one-month termination notice to Pandey on Wednesday and all his services have been terminated,“ BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh told TOI. Sources at the university said the action was taken because of Pandey's “unwanted“ activities.

“He reportedly screened the banned documentary on Nirbhaya for his students. He was also involved in holding processions and dharna on the campus and in political and Naxal activities which could not be tolerated,“ BHU administration sources told TOI.

In a statement, Pandey accused R S S hardliners for his ouster: “In a recent board meet ing the vice-chancellor of BHU, who was made the chairman of IIT BoG (board of governors) by minister of HRD, GoI, bypassing the panel of five names recommended by a resolution of BoG, Prof GC Tripathi, and dean of faculty affairs, IIT, BHU, Prof Dhananjay Pandey , both gentlemen associated with R S S, primarily forced the decision.“ (sic) “I wish to clarify that I am not a Naxalite. The ideology that I would consider myself closest to is Gandhism. But I do identify with causes taken up by Naxalites even though I may not agree with their methods. I also think it requires courage and sacrifice to be a Naxalite and I certainly don't have that kind of resolve,“ Pandey added. He denied screening the banned documentary on Nirbhaya.
