Cleaning the river

November 2017/ Namami Barak festival

November 19, 2017: The Times of India

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched dredging operations for the Barak river during the inauguration of the three-day Namami Barak festival in November 2017.

The Barak river, designated as National Waterways-16, saw the commencement of the cleaning-up activity at Bhanga point in Karimganj district. The Barak river will link up the Barak Valley region of Assam and neighbouring Mizoram and Manipur with the Haldia port in West Bengal via Bangladesh.

The river festival, which showcased the beauty and glory of the mighty river, highlights Assam's potential and help put the valley on the world map as also usher in economic development.
