Rampur Town

Town in the Deoband tahsil of Saharanpur District, United Provinces, situated in 29 48' N. and 77 28' E., on the old road from Saharanpur to Delhi. Population (1901), 7,945, the number of Hindus and Musalmans being about equal. The town is said to have been founded by one Raja Ram, and according to tradition it was captured by Salar Masud. There is a fine modern Jam temple, and also a tomb of a Muhammadan saint, Shaikh Ibrahim, near which a religious fair is held in June. The town is administered under Act XX of 1856, with an income of about Rs. 2,000. There is some trade in gram, and the town is noted for the manufacture of glass bangles.
