2018: Six idols missing

Six idols missing from 1,200-yr-old Jain temple in TN, September 17, 2018: The Times of India

At least six panchaloha idols have reportedly gone missing from a 1,200-yearold Jain temple at Perumpugai village of Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The temple is maintained by the Bhagawan Shri 1008 Mallinath Jinalaya Trust.

The theft came to light when the temple watchman, Chandran, 71, found the locks of the gate and door broken on Sunday AND informed the trustees and the Gingee police.

Two idols of the main deity Mallinathar (1-foot-tall each), Jolamalini idol (0.75 ft), Dharanedhran and Padmavathy idols (2-ft each) and Parsha Nadhar idol (1.5 ft) were found missing from the temple, said R Gautham Sagar, one of the trustees.

“The authorities do not have records for 33 antique idols of the temple. Therefore, they were clueless about the exact age and worth of these idols,” a police officer said. Three special teams have been formed to nab the culprits, he added.
