Shrivathsa Sridhar Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap is all set to return to competitive action at the Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold early next month, having recovered from a serious knee injury that ended his Olympic dream. He was ranked inside the top 15 in 2016 and fancied his chances of qualifying for Rio, was left devastated when he twisted his knee in the German Open in March 2016 and has not played since.

Following surgery to repair the medial collateral ligament in his right leg and a long rehabilitation process, Kashyap decided to shift base to Bengaluru to work with noted coach Tom John at Tom's Badminton Academy here. “I initially thought I would come here for two months as I wanted a change in atmosphere,“ Kashyap told TOI on Tuesday .“The Olympics was a big deal for me so when I didn't make it because of injury it was quite disturbing,“ the No. 69 added.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist said he had conveyed his decision to shift base to long-time coach Pullela Gopichand, who took it well. “He was okay with it and there was not much discussion,“ said Kashyap, noting that the coach was busy preparing his other wards Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu for the Games. “He didn't say much, but I'm sure he understands that I'm a senior player. He definitely didn't take it badly as he understood my situation.“

An Olympic quarterfinalist in London 2012, Kashyap said he was mentally and physically in a better place ahead of the $120,000 GP Gold event at Balikpapan, which will be held from September 6-11. He then plans to participate in the $300,000 Japan Open (September 20-25) and the $600,000 Korea Open (September 27October 2). “I will see how I perform in these events and take call on where I will continue training. I wanted to try this and it will make sense if I do well.“
