Sonam Sherpa

February 15, 2020: The Times of India

Kalimpong/Siliguri:

Sonam Sherpa was lead guitarist of Delhi based rock band Parikrama.

Born in Kalimpong, barely 70km from the Bengal hill town, Sonam was the pillar of Parikrama and acknowledged by fans and peers as one of India's finest rock and blues guitarists.

He was in Kurseong for the shoot of a Nepali-Hindi movie, Broken Wings, and had been staying at the Cochrane Place hotel there for several weeks.

Besides doing gigs and composing — he debuted as a composer in Bollywood with the 2014 film Manjunath — Sonam ran the Parikrama School of Music at Hauz Khas Village in Delhi. Sonam founded the bands Mrigya and North East Express, but it was with Parikrama that he tasted fame across the country and abroad.

Paying tribute to Sonam, Kolkata-based guitarist Amyt Datta said: “It’s a heavy loss. Sadly, people mention such artistes only when they die and not when they are alive and battling with their lives and playing the guitar,” he said. Bhoomi frontman Soumitra Ray said: “All I can say is that when a musician leaves, only the curtains fall. But the beauty of his music survives.”
