Napier: India wins

Mandhana, Rodrigues shine in emphatic win, January 25, 2019: The Times of India

The in-form Smriti Mandhana and teen sensation Jemimah Rodrigues hammered New Zealand’s clueless bowling attack to steer India to an emphatic ninewicket triumph in the opening ODI of a three-match series.

The 22-year-old Mandhana (105) and the 18-year-old Rodrigues (81 not out) put together a batting masterclass after the bowlers did the job for India by dismissing the hosts for 192.

The Indians produced a thoroughly clinical performance to eke out the comfortable victory in 33 overs.

While Mandhana, fresh from winning the ICC women’s cricketer of the year award, slammed her fourth ODI hundred, Rodrigues notched up her maiden international fifty.

Mandhana and Rodrigues stitched together the highest ever opening wicket stand against New Zealand -- a 190-run partnership that stood for 32.2 overs. Rodrigues was making just her fifth appearance in national colours.

Earlier, put in to bat, New Zealand let slip a good start and crumbled in the face of India’s relentless spin combination of Poonam Yadav and Ekta Bisht. Both Bisht and Yadav snared three wickets each.

Yadav, in fact, ripped through the White Ferns’ middle order, claiming the scalps of skipper Amy Satterthwaite

(31), Lauren Down (0) and Amelia Kerr (28) in her quota of 10 overs. This was after Susie Bates (38) and Sophie Devine (28) gave New Zealand a solid start.

But Devine’s run out by Deepti Sharma triggered a collapse and New Zealand folded in 48.4 overs.

Brief Scores: India Women 193 for 1 (Mandhana 105, Rodrigues 81*) beat New Zealand Women 192 (Bates 36, Bisht 3-32, Poonam 3-42, Deepti 2-27) by nine wickets.

Mount Maunganui: India wins match, series

After men, Indian women too win ODI series vs NZ, January 30, 2019: The Times of India

Opener Smriti Mandhana led the chase for India with familiar panache after a feisty bowling performance that steered the side to a series-clinching 8-wicket triumph over New Zealand Women in the second One-dayer.

Opting to field, India produced an excellent effort to bowl out New Zealand for a paltry 161 in 44.2 overs before player of the match Mandhana (90 not out) and skipper Mithali Raj (63 not out) stitched a 151-run unbroken third-wicket stand to guide the team to an easy win.

The duo resurrected the Indian run chase from 15 for 2 after the early loss of opener Jemimah Rodrigues (0) and Deepti Sharma (8). “It feels great but I think our bowlers deserved the player of the match award more than me. I will give it away to our bowlers, they did a great job to restrict New Zealand on a good wicket,” Mandhana said in the post-match presentation.

The 22-year-old Mandhana has been in excellent form in recent times and Tuesday’s half century was her eighth in the last 10 ODI innings. She hit 105 in the first match of the ongoing series. On Tuesday, she took just 82 deliveries in her unbeaten knock of 90. Raj, on the other hand, faced 111 deliveries in her sedate knock 63. But, she was a perfect counterfoil to the aggressive Mandhana. Raj completed the run chase in style with a six as India reached to 166 for 2 in 35.2 overs.

“I am happy with the way the team is shaping up. I have always enjoyed batting in challenging conditions. It wasn’t easy, it required patience here. Smriti is in good form and somebody had to give her support,” Raj said.

India have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match contest, which is part of the ICC Women’s Championship series.

‘We are going for 3-0’

Mount Maunganui: Indian captain Mithali Raj on Tuesday said that they are targeting a clean sweep and there won't be any let up in the team's intensity after the series-clinching win in the second women's ODI against New Zealand here.

“We definitely want to make it 3-0. At the same time, we will try and give some of the youngsters an opportunity,” said Mithali. “Initially, a lot of people asked me if the spinners can turn the match around on these wickets. The spinners have been doing well from word go and Smriti (Mandhana) has been amongst runs and so has been Jemimah (Rodrigues).”

BRIEF SCORES: New Zealand 161 in 44.2 overs (A Satterthwaite 71; Goswami 3/23) lost to India 166/2 in 35.2 overs (S Mandhana 90*, M Raj 63*)

T20Is

Wellington: New Zealand wins

Little support for Smriti as India women lose to NZ, February 7, 2019: The Times of India

Smriti Mandhana scored a record-smashing half century but the Indian women’s team failed to make it count, losing by 23 runs in the opening T20 International against New Zealand. Mandhana held the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian before the match and she bettered it by a ball during her 58-run knock at the WestPac Stadium. The 22-year-old faced 34 balls in all but reached the 50-mark off 24 deliveries.

However, New Zealand pacer Lea Tahuhu played a decisive role with three scalps off her four overs to derail India’s pursuit of a 160-run target which was going smoothly till the time Mandhana was at the crease. India eventually folded for 136 in 19.1 overs.

Leg-spinner Amelia Kerr (2/28) clinched the crucial wickets of Mandhana and Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur to wreck the visitors’ chances. Off-spinner Leigh Kasperek also picked up a couple of wickets.

Harmanpreet, on the other hand, blamed India’s loss on a poor batting effort, especially in the last 10 overs.

Veteran Mithali Raj, who captains the Indian ODI side, was dropped from the match.

“We are looking to give chance to young girls, that is the only reason,” said Harmanpreet when asked about Mithali’s absence from the line-up and whether her experience would have come handy here.

Auckland: India loses match, series

Middle order fails Indian women again, February 9, 2019: The Times of India

A shoddy batting performance by the middleorder saw Indian women lose a nail-biting second T20 International against New Zealand by four wickets and concede the three-match series here on Friday. The Indian women had earlier lost the first Twenty20 International by 23 runs in Wellington.

Needing a win to keep the series alive, Indian women posted a modest 135/6 despite being 72/2 after the first 10 overs. Chasing a modest target, New Zealand made a heavy weather of the chase before scampering home off the last ball of the match, losing six wickets.

Jemimah Rodrigues slammed a 53-ball 72 that included six boundaries and one six but India scored only 63 runs in the back 10 to end up 20 runs short, which became their undoing. The White Ferns lost two quick wickets — opener Sophie Devine (19) and Caitlin Gurrey (4) by the seventh over with the scoreboard reading 40.

But then Suzie Bates (62) and Amy Satterthwaite (23) joined hands and the duo stitched 61 runs for the third wicket to get New Zealand women back into the track.

Left-arm orthodox bowler Radha Yadav (2/23) and medium pacer Arundhati Reddy (2/22) bowler well for India in the middle overs to take the match down to the wire. Reddy, in fact, raised hopes with twin blows in the 18th over, but her efforts were not enough to prevent the hosts from clinching the series.

BRIEF SCORES: NZ women 136/6 in 20 overs (Bates 62; Reddy 2/22, Radha 2/23) beat India women 135/6 (Rodrigues 72, Mandhana 36; Mair 2-17) by 4 wickets.
