Jaisingh is StanC PE global co-CEO

Standard Chartered Bank has named Nainesh Jaisingh as the global co-CEO of its private equity business with a specific mandate to spur growth in emerging markets and West Asia. Jaisingh, who spearheaded the India unit for six years, will now helm the $3-billion plus fund’s global operations along with Alastair Morrison. The investment banker turned fund manager’s elevation is probably the first instance of an Indian honcho spearheading a bulge bracket cross-border private equity fund.

The global PE industry has been increasing exposure to Asia, Latin America and Africa with significant dry powder chasing investment opportunities in markets like India, China and Brazil. Jaisingh will continue to be based in Mumbai as the India portfolio accounts for nearly one-third of the global assets under management. A StanChart spokesperson has confirmed the development. Jaisingh led StanChart’s investment in Coffee Day Resorts, the holding company of serial entrepreneur VG Siddartha, and Redington India recently.

Jaisingh joins the growing list of Indian descent executives such as Dun & Bradstreet CEO Sara Mathew, S&P CEO Deven Sharma and Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha, who are steering global corporations in the wake of business dynamics shifting from developed markets to emerging markets like India. “India is globally competitive in terms of intellectual capital. We now see a number of India-born, Indian-schooled CEOs at global organizations. So it should come as no surprise that private equity—which has had some spectacular successes in India—is promoting Indians to lead their organizations,” said Prof Vikram Kuriyan, director, centre for investment, ISB.
