KARNATAKA: His White House sprawls across 35,000 sq ft, has 12 bedrooms

Murugesh R Nirani, the large and medium industries minister in the recently-ousted BJP government, has been accused of abusing his power and acquiring hundreds of acres of land during his tenure. Cases pertaining to them are pending before the Lokayukta court. Nirani, who comes from an affluent family and owns one of the largest sugar and cement plants in the country, says his father Rudrappa Nirani, the richest sugarcane cultivator in the district, discouraged him from becoming a politician. “My father went on a fast and made a public announcement not to vote for me. He thought that I would ruin all the property by joining politics,” he claims. But contrary to what his father may have thought, Nirani has only ended up increasing his assets manifold. Today, he owns a Rs 800 crore cement unit and a Rs 500 crore sugar factory — Nirani Sugars — near Mudhol. His residence, called ‘The White House’, is a sprawling 35,000 sq ft mansion built on 12 acres and has 12 bedrooms. Predictably, he rubbishes all allegations against him. “I have achieved success as an industrialist on my own mettle,” he says.
