“Merryl was born in Dongargarh, MP, in 1932. In 1947, she married Anthony, a sergeant in the British army... At the time of her marriage, he was serving in the Kolkata police and helping maintain peace during the Partition riots,” said their grandson Anthony Khatchaturian.

Merryl, a teacher for over 50 years and head of one of the best known Armenian families in Kolkata, returned home in a casket from the UK. She had migrated there after her husband’s death in 2002. Merryl passed away at a Birmingham hospital on December 12 in 2017 at the age of 85 and, as per her last wish, her body has been transported back to Kolkata to be buried next to her husband’s.
