Shortage of brides

2018, 2023

According to the 2011 Census, the sex ratio in Mandya was 986 females per 1000 males, which is slightly lower than the national average of 943 females per 1000 males.

Additionally, the literacy rate in Mandya was 73.6%, which is lower than the national average of 74.04%.

These factors may contribute to the difficulty in finding a suitable life partner in the region. Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Mandya district administration in 2018 found that around 60% of women in the district preferred men who had stable jobs in non-agricultural sectors, further exacerbating the bride crisis in the region.

Why are men in Karnataka's Mandya single even in their 40s?/ India Times- The Times of India / Mar 18, 2023 adds:

Agriculture, with its allied sectors, is the largest source of livelihood in India, particularly in rural areas. In Karnataka's Mandya though... being engaged in farming...has come with an unexpected consequence. For many men engaged in farming here, finding a bride has become a big concern...and there are farmers who have not been able to find themselves a life partner even after crossing the age of 35. For many, it’s been 10 years of only rejections.Out of 19 lakh people, around 5 lakh people are employed in farming in Mandya. And today many men here are single because young women, with a college education and jobs in bigger towns, are not interested in marrying farmers due to the uncertainties and challenges of agrarian life. This has led to a bride crisis in Mandya.
