Vs. their contemporaries

Laxmikant-Pyarelal overtook Shankar-Jaikishan as being the most popular music director (most number of songs in the annual program) in 1968. The Laxmikant-Pyarelal - Rahul Dev Burman battle royal began in earnest in 1971: in 1972 the two were tied for the most number of hits, in 1973 RD overtook Laxmikant-Pyarelal .

In the early 80s Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Rahul Dev Burman were remarkably competitive. However both Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Rahul Dev Burman were overtaken by Bappi Lahiri as having the most number of hits in 1983 and 1984; in 1985 Rahul Dev Burman took the most number of hits spot from Bappi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal . After that there were barely any Rahul Dev Burman songs on the geetmala.
