Kharar, Bengal

Town in the Ghatal subdivision of Midnapore District, Bengal, situated in 22 degree 40' N. and 87 degree 44' E. Population (1901), 9,508. Brass and bell-metal wares are extensively manufactured. Kharar was constituted a municipality in 1888. The income and expenditure during the decade ending 190 1-2 averaged Rs. 3,500 and Rs. 3,600 respectively. In 1903-4 the income was Rs. 4,800, derived mainly from a tax on persons (or property tax) ; and the expenditure was Rs. 4,100.
