YEAR-WISE DEVELOPMENTS

As in 2022

Ramendra Singh, March 20, 2022: The Times of India

Bhopal: Kaveri Dhimar, who once rowed a boat with her sisters to fish in dam backwaters to repay their father’s debt, is now one of India’s top female canoers.
Kaveri won seven gold medals for Madhya Pradesh in the 31st National Senior Canoe Sprint Championship and will represent India in the Asian Championships in Thailand from March 24 to 27. She is 17.
Spotted in a sports talent hunt in 2017 and groomed at the MP Watersports Academy, the labourer’s daughter has proved her grit and determination on every occasion. In a sport where being tall is considered a big advantage, the diminutive Kaveri has proved she can row against the tide.
“It’s always been my dream to see the Indian Tricolour flying high in global canoeing waters,” Kaveri told TOI. The teenager’s family lives in Mandi village in Sehore district, about 40 km from Bhopal.

Kaveri is fifth among seven sisters and two little brothers. “My family never had any land. We are from a fishermen’s community, and our parents relied only on fishing to run the family,” she said.

“Before joining the academy in 2017, my father had to repay a Rs 45,000 debt. My sisters and I helped out by fishing and we finally managed to pay off his debt,” said Kaveri, adding that she has “always been in love with water and water sports”.

On Thursday, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented her a cheque for Rs 11 lakh. “Keep playing, and keep winning, we are with you at every step,” he told the canoer.

Sports minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia, whom the teenaged athlete considers her “motivator and mentor”, said: “Kaveri has proven that where there is a will, there is a way. She has made the state proud on several occasions. Such talent is a motivation for others. ”

Kaveri said: “It is Scindia-ji’s regular guidance and support that has helped me reach such a level. Without the MP Watersports Academy, it wasn’t possible. ”

The CM’s reward will encourage other athletes, Scindia said.
