The Jain population was 42 lakh of the total Indian population of 102 crore in 2001; ten years later, the Census of 2011 revealed that it rose to 44 lakh, with India’s total population also rising to 120 crore. So though in terms of absolute numbers, there has been a growth, in terms of percentage of the overall population, there has been a decline of .03% — from .40% in 2001 to .37% in 2011. Also, according to the latest National Family Health Survey, the fertility rate among Jains is 1.2, while for Hindus it is 2.13 and for Muslims 2.6.
