Hissar Tahsil

Tahsil of Hissar District, Punjab, lying between 28° 54' and 29° 32' N. and 75° 22' and 76° 2' E., on the borders of the Bikaner desert, with an area of 810 square miles. The population in 1901 was 128,783, compared with 122,299 i^"^ 1891. Hissar Town (population, 17,647) is the head-quarters, and the tahsil also contains 134 villages. The land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to 1 -6 lakhs. The northern part is a bare plain, forming part of the tract known as Hariana, where the soil is a firm sandy loam. South of the thin belt of fertility afforded by the Western Jumna Canal, the level stretches of poor cultivation gradually merge into the rolling sandhills characteristic of the neighbouring State of Bikaner.
