Mumbai:Prof Gopi Chand Narang was a noted Urdu writer, literary critic and Urdu world’s tallest ambassador.
A former president of Sahitya Akademi, Professor Emeritus at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi—which he called his social and literary lab after he left University of Wisconsin where Nobel Laureate Prof Har Gobind Khurana was his colleague—Narang championed Urdu like few did. In an interview to TOIin May 2011 Narang had called Urdu “India’s linguistic Taj Mahal. ”
“Thereare three hallmarks of the Mughal era — the Taj Mahal, Ghalib’s poetry and Urdu. . . Although every language is beautiful, Urdu’s sophistication and charm captivates everyone. That’s why I call Urdu India’s linguistic Taj Mahal,” he had said.
Born in Dukki in Balochistan in 1931, Narang was a partition refugee and reached pinnacle of Urdu literary criticism and scholarship with diligence, sheer hard work and rigorous research. “Narang will be remembered for many things but also for introducing post-modernism debate in Urdu. He believed that Urdu literature is wedded to the roots. He will also be known for reevaluating classical poets like Meer, Ghalib, Iqbal, Amir Khusrau,” said Sahitya Akademi Award winning Urdu novelist Rahman Abbas.
He is the only Urdu writer in the world who was feted by the presidents of both India and Pakistan with their prestigious awards—Padma Bhushan and Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
