Kanipakam Vinayaka temple revenue hits a new high

TIRUMALA: Protests and even political instability vis-a-vis bifurcation of the state have had no affect on the revenue of Kanipakam Varasiddi Vinayaka temple in Chittoor district.

The temple, which earned Rs 23 crores when the agitation for a separate state was at its peak in 2009, saw its revenues jump to Rs 61 crore in 2013- 2014. The growth in income has been remarkable from 2009 till now, with the Ganesha temple netting the highest at Rs 61.89 crore in earnings, up from Rs 42 crore in the previous year. Interestingly, the temple ranked 10th in terms of high income in united Andhra Pradesh.

Apart from Sri Raja Rajeswara temple at Karim Nagar, Sri Sita Ramanjaneya temple at Bhadrachalam, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple at Yadagiri Gutta in Telangana, seven among the top 10 earning temples are in Andhra Pradesh. Post bifurcation, Ganesha temple reached seventh place. After the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD), Sri Varaha Narasimha Swami temple in Simhachalam is the richest followed by Sri Durga Malleswara Kanakadurga temple at Vijayawada.

According to official statistics of the endowment department, all the temples registered a minimum of 10 percent growth in income each year. "Prior to 2007, there was growth of just two to seven percent in the income each year. But now the situation has changed with many facilities extended by temples," an endowment official said.

But the growth rate of Kanipakam Vinayaka temple has been phenomenal with around 10 to 15 percent growth. Kanipakam temple's records reveal that nearly Rs 40 crore was spent on improving amenities. About 100 more rooms have been added to the cottages in the temple.

"The entrance has been made more comfortable, so whenever I visit Tirumala, I also visit Kanipakam temple," K Vishali, a devotee from Nellore said. Officials said as the rush at Tirumala increases, it will have a spillover affect on Kanipakam temple as well. The hundi collection increased from Rs 2.9 crores in 2004- 2005 to Rs 9 crore in 2013- 2014.
