2005-12

Mar 03 2017: The Times of India

WILL INDIA BLOOM IN GARDEN CITY? As the hosts get ready to restore parity in the series against Australia, TOI looks at the last five Tests played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Vs Pakistan, March 24-28, 2005

An epic double hundred by Younis Khan helped Pakistan to 570. Sehwag responded with a blazing 201 and India reached 449.With just a day and a half remaining, a draw seemed the most likely result.Pakistan declared their second innings at 261 for 2 and set India 383 to win in a minimum of 96 overs. But Sehwag's run out when India were 87, changed the game as India lost by 168 runs.

Vs Pakistan, March 8-12, 2007

Sourav Ganguly slammed 239, Yuvraj Singh struck a sublime 169 as India amassed 626. Misbah ul-Haq held fort for the visitors and scored 133 to keep India at bay as Pakistan came within 89 runs of India's score. With the hosts leading the series 1-0, skipper Kumble avoided erring on the side of adventure and declared after lunch on Day 5 setting Pakistan an improbable 374 to win in a session and a half. The result was a draw.

Vs Australia, October 9-13, 2008

Ricky Ponting's first Test ton on Indian soil and Mike Hussey's polished 146 helped Australia score 430. At 7-232, a big lead for Australia looked imminent. But India's unlikely heroes with the bat proved to be Zaheer Khan (57*) and Harbhajan Singh (54) as the pair added 80 runs in 23 overs to eat out time. Australia declared their second innings at 228 for 7, setting India 299 to win in 83 overs. The match ended in a draw

Vs Australia, October 9-13, 2010

A ton from Marcus North (128) enabled Australia to 478. Sachin Tendulkar, enjoying a profitable second wind, struck a sublime 214 to help India score 495. It was a disappointing return considering they were 4-411. A fine spell of bowling on the fifth morning from Zaheer Khan enabled India to get rid of Australia for 223 leaving India with a target of 207 in 78 overs. A counterattacking second innings half century from debutant Cheteshwar Pujara (72 off 89 balls) took India to a seven-wicket win.

Vs New Zealand, August 31 to September 3, 2012

Ross Taylor's blazing 113 (127 balls) helped the Kiwis to 365 despite Pragyan Ojha picking 5-99. Tim Southee then ran in like the wind and his 7-64 helped the Kiwis to bowl out the hosts for 353.The Kiwis, despite getting decent starts never found anyone to get past 30s and 40s and were bowled out for 248. India were chasing 261 in a day and two and a half sessions. At 5-166, India were rocking, but in Dhoni (48*) and Kohli (51*) they had two men with big hearts and strong minds. They put that to use to guide the team to a thrilling fivewicket win.

Quality of pitch

2017, 2022: below average

March 20, 2022: The Times of India

DUBAI: The Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch in Bengaluru, which was used for the second Test between India and Sri Lanka earlier this month, was rated "below average" by the ICC. India had defeated Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the Test which began on March 12 and ended inside three days.

The venue thus received one demerit point under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.

"The pitch offered a lot of turn on the first day itself and though it improved with every session, in my view, it was not an even contest between the bat and ball," match referee Javagal Srinath said in a statement issued by ICC.

Srinath's report has been forwarded to the BCCI.

In 2017, the Bangalore wicket was rated as below average by ICC match referee Chris Broad after the second Test between India and Australia.

According to the revised ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, which was introduced on January 4, 2018, "if a pitch or outfield is rated as being substandard, that venue will be allocated a number of demerit points."

"One demerit point will be awarded to venues whose pitches are rated by the match referees as below average, while three and five demerit points will be awarded to venues whose pitches are marked as poor and unfit, respectively.

"No demerit point will be awarded when the outfield is rated as below average, but two and five demerit points will be awarded to venues whose outfields are marked as poor and unfit, respectively."

Demerit points will remain active for a rolling five-year period. When a venue accumulates five demerit points (or crosses that threshold), it will be suspended from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months, the ICC said.

A venue will be suspended from staging any international cricket for 24 months when it reaches the threshold of 10 demerit points.
