Filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta was known for his unique mix of reality and lyricism that made stories of dreamers and outliers flow like on-screen poetry.

Born in 1944 in a village, Dasgupta studied economics and took up a job as a lecturer. He quit teaching in 1976 to devote himself to his passion of making movies. Two years later, his directorial debut, ‘Dooratwa’, won a National Award for best feature film in Bengali.

Over a career spanning four decades, he got 32 National Awards. Dasgupta was mourned was not only by the film fraternity, but also by PM Narendra Modi. He tweeted he was “anguished” by the demise of the filmmaker, whose “works struck a chord with all sections of society”. CM Mamata Banerjee, in a tweet, said Dasgupta “infused lyricism into the language of cinema”. Some of the notable films he helmed include ‘Neem Annapurna’, ‘Grihajuddha’, ‘Bagh Bahadur’, ‘Tahader Katha’, ‘Charachar’, ‘Lal Darja’, ‘Uttara’, ‘Swapner Din’, ‘Kaalpurush’ and ‘Janala’.

He had also directed Hindi films — ‘Andhi Gali’ and ‘Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa’.
