Bangaon Subdivision,

Western subdivision of Jessore Dis- trict, Bengal, lying between 22°52 / and 23 26" N. and 88' 40' and 89 2' E., with an area of 649 square miles. The population in 1901 was 317,352, compared with 330,201 in 1891. It is a land of semi- stagnant rivers, the soil is comparatively poor, and the subdivision is more thinly populated (489 persons to the square mile) than the rest of the District. It contains one town, Mahespur (population, 4,180), and 798 villages, including Bangaon, the head-quarters. The principal marts are at Bangaon and Mahespur.
