The highlights

Hangzhou: A Games replete with historic firsts, a strong return to podium in sports it had earlier missed, and memorable comebacks will end with another landmark moment – for the first time, India will breach the 100-medal mark at the Asiad.

The unprecedented medal haul will also ensure India’s best-ever rank at the Asian Games in over 60 years, with fourth place behind China, Japan and South Korea now secured.

India began the penultimate day of competition here with 86 medals. Through the day, the team added nine more to the tally, with medals coming in hockey (gold), archery (silver and bronze), bridge (silver), badminton (bronze), sepaktakraw (bronze) and wrestling (3 bronze), taking the total to 95.

The final day of events before closing ceremony, the Indian team has confirmed medals in archery (three), kabaddi (two), badminton and men’s cricket. More are possible in women’s hockey and chess.

“We came here with the target of 100 medals but didn’t imagine our dream would come true,” said India’s chef de mission, Bhupinder Singh Bajwa. “Now, we will achieve it easily tomorrow. I congratulate all the players, along with the coaches and support staff, for reaching the target we set out to achieve.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is learnt to have invited each member of India’s 650-plus contingent for a felicitation ceremony in New Delhi on October 10.

India’s previous best performance at the continental showpiece event was in Jakarta five years ago, with 70 medals. Its previous highest overall finish was at the 1962 Asian Games, also in Jakarta, when India finished third. In every edition since then, the Indian team has ranked fifth or lower.

Here are some figures from a record-breaking campaign:

  • Of the 95 medals so far in 20 sports, 44 came from men, 41 from women, and 9 in mixed events.
  • The country has won 22 gold medals, again the most ever. Shooting has the most gold medallists – 7.
  • 51 medals came just from two sports – athletics (29) and shooting (22).
  • 30 athletes have so far won more than one medal, with rifleman Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and pistol shooter Esha Singh winning the most medals by a single athlete – 4 each.
  • On October 1, the team won the most medals in a single day – 15 – and there hasn’t been a single day without any medal.

Increased funding, focused training plans and routine exposure trips outside India, where the athletes practise and compete, are seen as some of the key reasons for the medal high, which follows the best-ever haul at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago.

This march to a century has also been made possible by a record number of women podium finishers, and medals in sports the country has little or no history in, breaking decades-old records in some. The last-minute change of mind by the Board of Control for Cricket in India – which had earlier decided against sending the women’s and men’s teams for the Asiad – also ensured two medals.

The medal count was also aided by the inclusion of team events in shooting, which wasn’t the case five years ago in Jakarta. Thirteen of the 22 shooting medals came in team events. But even that is an improvement from the last time they were included – back in 2014 when India won just four medals in team events.

Other significant firsts pushed the tally to the 100 mark. For instance, Parul Chaudhary’s gold medal in the 5,000 metres race was India’s first in the event at the Asiad since it was introduced at the 1998 Games.

Similarly, in equestrian, the dressage team produced a stunning performance to win the gold medal, while in the individual event, Anush Agarwalla won the bronze, another first. The 4x400m men’s relay team recorded a first top-of-the-podium performance since the 1962 Asiad.

On Saturday, India could complete a clean sweep of gold medals in compound archery, a discipline that was introduced in India just 19 years ago. While compound isn’t an Olympic event, Bajwa said the athletes must soon shift their focus towards the Paris Games, which are less than nine months away.

“We must now look at the Paris Olympics as our next target. I urge athletes to return to their training after a brief rest and begin their Paris preparations as soon as possible. Given the haul here, I am confident that we shall double the Tokyo mark in Paris,” Bajwa said.

TOI Sports Desk, Sep 29, 2023: The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Two young Indian shooters, Palak Gulia and Esha Singh, took centre stage at the Asian Games, clinching gold and silver medals in the highly competitive 10m air pistol event. Their performances have added to India's burgeoning tally in the sport, now standing at an impressive 17 medals, including six golds.

Seventeen-year-old Palak emerged as the star of the day, securing the coveted gold medal with a remarkable score of 242.1 in the finals, establishing an Asian Games record.

This victory marks her first major individual medal in international competition, a remarkable feat given her relatively short time in the shooting scene, having joined just last year.Asian Games Day 6

Esha, who had already won an individual silver in the 25m pistol event earlier in the week, continued her stellar performance by claiming the silver in the 10m air pistol event. She scored 239.7 in the finals, bolstering India's medal count. The duo's fierce competition pushed each other to new heights and captivated the audience until Palak eventually secured the gold.

Pakistan's Talat Kishmala also displayed commendable skill, ultimately settling for a bronze after a closely contested battle with Esha.

The day's triumphs did not end there for Indian shooters. In the 50m rifle arena, the men's 3-positions team, featuring the young trio of Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale, and Akhil Sheoran, achieved a historic victory by defeating their Chinese rivals. They not only clinched the gold but also set a world record score of 1769, surpassing the Chinese team by six points.

Aishwary and Swapnil's exceptional performances earned them spots in the individual finals, marking a groundbreaking achievement in a sport that has long been dominated by Chinese marksmen at the Asian level.

Swapnil Kusale, who is considered a strong contender for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, delivered a stellar performance by setting an Asian Games record in the qualification round with a score of 591.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar matched Swapnil's score but secured a place in the finals, taking second place due to a higher number of shots closer to the bullseye (inner-10s). Swapnil had 33 'inner-10s,' while Aishwary had 27.

Despite finishing fifth in qualification, Akhil Sheoran missed out on the individual medal round, as only two shooters per country are allowed in this stage.

The remarkable achievements of these Indian shooters reflect their extraordinary talent and determination. Their success is a significant milestone for Indian competitive shooting and a source of pride for the nation.

Additionally, in the women's 10m air pistol team event, Esha Singh played a pivotal role in securing a silver medal for India, alongside teammates Palak Gulia and Divya TS. Their aggregate score of 1731 points secured the silver, with China taking the gold with a total of 1736, setting an Asian Games record. Chinese Taipei claimed the bronze with a total of 1723 points.

The qualification round scores determined the team medallists, while the top eight individual shooters advanced to the finals, competing for individual glory.

Esha had previously claimed a silver medal in the women's individual 25m pistol event earlier in the week and also contributed to the gold medal-winning women's 25m pistol team event alongside Manu Bhaker and Rhythm Sangwan on the same day.

Asian Games 2023 Day 8 Highlights: Avinash Sable was in a league of his own as he cruised to victory in men's 5000m steeplechase and won India's first track and field gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor then added to the tally just minutes later as he successfully defended the gold he won at Jakarta 2018. Earlier, the men's shooting trap team of Kynan Darius Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman won gold. An overview

Asian Games 2023: India clinched 107 medals in Hangzhou, and also broke plenty of records.

Asian Games 2023 saw India create history with a record haul of 107 medals in Hangzhou, consisting of 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. India crossed their previous tally of 70 medals with ease, and also went past the century mark on the final day. Due to such dominant displays, the pressure has increased on India's athletes for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

In shooting, India's dominance continued as shooters from the country also set new records. The Indian shooting contingent went past its previous Asiad best of 14 medals, bagging 22 in Hangzhou. Archery and badminton also saw India bring in medals. Meanwhile, the cricket and kabaddi teams bagged gold in their respective categories. The men's kabaddi final between India and Iran saw plenty of controversy in the final minute which halted the match for a lengthy period.

In javelin throw, we saw Neeraj Chopra manage to win gold, which was also helped by the absence of rival Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan. Meanwhile, India's Kishore Kumar Jena got silver in the event. The Indian men's 4x400 athletics relay team, who broke the Asian record at the World Championships this year, came out on top, taking the lead very early in the race. Meanwhile, defending champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor reclaimed his title on the last throw, with a huge 20.36m effort to clinch gold, ahead of Saudi Arabia's Mohamed Daouda Tolo (20.18m). He also became the fourth Indian to win back-to-back golds at the Asian Games.

Here is list of some of India’s Asian Games record-breakers and where they stand in comparison to all-time greats:

1. 10m Air Rifle Team Men

The Indian men's 10m air rifle team bagged India's first gold in Hangzhou. Consisting of Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil, Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, the team shot a total of 1893.7 points during the individual qualification round, 0.4 points more than the previous world record score set by China in last month's World Championships in Baku. They also broke China's Asian record (1887.4) and Games record (1886.4).

2. Sift Kaur Samra

In women's 50m rifle 3 position individual event, SIft Kaur Samra smashed the world record with a score of 469.6. Great Britain's Seonaid McIntosh of Great Britain was the previous world record holder with 467 points. Meanwhile, she also broke the Asian (463.3) and Games record (458.8), held by China's Chang Jing and Mongolia's Gankhuyag Nandinzaya previously.

3. 50m Rifle 3P Team Men

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran claimed gold in the men's 3P rifle team event. The trio reached a cumulative 1769 points to break the world record, eight more than the previous one set by United Stages in 2022 at the CAT championships.

4. Avinash Sable

The great Indian runner blitzed to a gold medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase final. En route to his gold, he also broke the previous Games record held by Iran's Hossein Keyhani. Sable clocked 8:19:50, beating Hossein's 8:22:79. Such was Sable dominance, that second-placed Japan's Ryoma Aoki clocked 8:23:75. Sable is still a long way from the Asian or world record in this event. They were set by Qatar's Saif Saaeed Shaheen in 2004, in Brussels. He clocked 7:53:63.

5. Palak Gulia

17-year-old sensation Palak Gulia created history in the 10m air pistol women final, setting a new Games record with a total of 242.1 and also grabbed gold. The previous record holder was China's Qian Wang, who registered 240.3 in the 2018 edition in Jakarta. In this event, the Asian record is held by Japan's Yukari Konishi, who bagged 245.3 in Japan in 2017. Meanwhile, the world record is held by Serbia's Zorana Arunovic, who scored 246.9 in 2017 in Maribor.
