Mr. Arjuna Rao was born in a poor family to Garatayya and Venkamma at Vanapamula near Gudivada in Krishna district in 1917. He completed his III Form and Higher Grade Examinations in 1940. His association with Gora, who founded the Atheist Society in 1940, attracted him towards atheism and the freedom movement.

Gora asked Arjuna Rao to marry his eldest daughter Manorama. Gandhiji wanted Arjuna Rao to stay at Sevagram and Manorama at the Kasturi Ba Training Centre at Bobbili for two years separately.

The wedding was performed in the presence of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Acharya Vinobha Bhave, and others at Sevagram on March 13, 1948.

The 100th birthday of freedom fighter Raavuri Arjuna Rao and his 70th wedding anniversary with Manorama, are being celebrated by the Lok Nayak Foundation at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Assembly Hall of Andhra University. Announcing this at a media conference here on Monday, Lok Nayak Foundation chairman Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad recalled the contribution of Mr. Arjuna Rao to the cause of promoting an egalitarian society, freedom movement and his commitment to Gandhian principles.

“He was influenced by Thota Narasaiah, who had responded to Gandhiji’s call to boycott foreign cloth, and had been wearing only khadi for the past 100 years,”he said.
