In the last 72 years, India as a nation has taken giant strides when it comes to technology and innovation . The Indian IT industry continues to be at the forefront of the development of the country. As the country celebrates its 73rd Independence Day, we take a look at some of the biggest tech milestones of independent India

1951: The first Indian Institute of Technology was set up at Kharagpur, West Bengal

1954: The Atomic Energy Establishment set up in Trombay for nuclear energy research. It was later renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1967

1958: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was established

1959: It was this year when limited duration television programming started in the country

1959: The first digital computer – called TIFR Automatic Computer -- in India was built by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research

1968: What is now India’s biggest tech firm, Tata Consultancy Services set up. Amongst its first services offered was a punch card.

1969: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was set up

1970: To promote computing and electronics, Department of Electronics was established

1974: The first successful nuclear bomb was tested in Pokhran, Rajasthan

1978: Tech giant IBM exited India which led to announcement of microcomputer policy. This paved the way for private companies like Wipro and HCL to begin operations

1981: With a clear focus to provide outsourced IT services, Indian tech giant Infosys was set up.

1983: Indian National Satellite System kicks off as Space Shuttle Challenger deploys INSAT-1B

1984: Astronaut Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to travel in space on April 2.

1986: The seat reservation system of Indian Railways is computerized for the first time

1991: The Indian economy ‘opens’ and leads to abolition of import duty on computers used for software export; earnings made tax-free for 10 years.

1991: India's very own first super computer called PARAM 8000 was born

1995: Mobile phone services got inaugurated as the first mobile phone call is made by West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu to telecom minister Sukh Ram

2008: India’s first lunar probe, Chandrayaan-1 is launched by ISRO

2013: Mars Orbiter Mission, or better known as Mangalyaan, India’s first interplanetary mission gets underway

2016: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) established by separating the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY) from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology
