A survey has revealed that Uttar Pradesh is home to 1.11 crore `ghost' students, who are enrolled in government-run primary schools, but have never been identified.

According to a sample survey conducted by CAG in 16 districts of the state -Unnao, Bahraich, Farukkhabad, Ghaziabad, Ghazipur, Jhansi, Lakhimpur, Mau, Pilibhit, Sultanpur, Rampur, Firozabad, Sonhebhadra, Gorakhpur, Kanpur Dehat and Maharajganj -13 districts had a higher number of enrolled students than the number which actually attends classes.

State government's household survey puts the number of children identified in schools at 11.88 crore during 2011 and 2016, while figures by District Information System of Education (DISE) show there are 12.99 crore children enrolled in schools.
