Caste system in the village

Sep 18, 2019: The Times of India

Pemmanahalli is a hamlet of 250 Golla families in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district, about 150 km north of Bengaluru. It sits on the Karnataka-Telangana border.

Gollas are a backward community and most of them depend on farming. There are many priests in Pemmanahalli, Pavagad taluk, and their view is often the final say in community matters.

Why Karnataka villagers barred entry of a Dalit BJP MP

Despite the village’s dire financial condition, residents have not changed their ways, exhibiting strict adherence to discriminatory and inhuman practices. They don’t visit Dalits’ homes or allow them inside the villages out of fear that it would act as a bad omen.

Menstruating women are asked to stay outside their families’ compounds.

“We don’t know when or why this practice [ban on Dalits’ entry] was started, but I have been seeing it since my childhood,” said Rangaswamy, a villager.

The practice infuriates Dalits who live in nearby areas, but over the past several decades, they have grown tired of protesting and accepted their reality. The village has a primary school.
