Foreign Awardees Range From Yoga Guru To Indologist, January 27, 2018: The Times of India

Not-so-famous get due at Padmas

Among 85 Padma awardees this year, 16 are foreigners given the prestigious award for their work in public affairs, art and dance, yoga, spiritualism, medicine, social work, trade, literature and education.

Among the prominent names are the late Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin who has been given the Padma Bhushan posthumously. He was the envoy from 2009 until his death in 2017 and played a key role in boosting Indo-Russia ties. In fact, a road was named after him in Chanakyapuri last year. V P Nanda, an OCI (overseas citizen of India), USA, has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Sanduk Ruit, an eye surgeon from Nepal, got the Padma Shri. Ruit is an AIIMS-educated opthalmologist whose 1980s’ innovation led to a 90% reduction in the cost of cataract surgery. He reportedly treats 2,500 patients aweek, free for those who can’t afford, and himself trekking to those who cannot make it to Kathmandu. A Vietnamese, Nguyen Tien Thien, secretary general of National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, was given the Padma Shri.

Other Padma Shri recipients include Ramli Bin Ibrahim, a Malaysian classical Odissi dancer; Bounlap Keokangna, a conservationist from Laos who played an important role in the restoration of a Shiva Temple in Laos; Saudi Arabia’s Nouf Marwaai, the first certified yoga instructor who played a critical role in legalising yoga in Saudi Arabia; and Habibullo Rajabov from Tajikistan, an Indologist known for his work in disseminating Hindi language in Tajikistan.

A BRIEF LOOK AT SOME INDIAN WINNERS

PADMA VIBHUSHAN

P PARAMESWARAN: The 91-year-old from Kerala is one of the founders of Inter-national Forum for India’s Heritage, a socio-cultural body that promotes the country’s heritage. He is known for his fight for free speech during the Emergency. A prolific writer, the R-S-S ideologue’s works include a book on Swami Vivekananda and Karl Marx, titled ‘Marx and Vivekananda’. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004

ILAIYARAAJA: The 74-yerar-old music composer, better known as ‘Isaignani’ (saint of music), has millions of fans across the globe. Hailing from a nondescript hamlet in Tamil Nadu, he shot into prominence with Tamil film ‘Annakili’ in 1976. He has composed music for more than 1,000 films and 6,000 songs in many Indian languages

GHULAM MUSTAFA KHAN: The 87-yearold is a vocalist who has trained singers since 1960s. From Manna Dey to Geeta Dutt to Asha Bhosle to Lata Mangeshkar to AR Rahman, Hariharan and Sonu Nigam, Khan believes that “music is a universal language”. Khan is from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh

The folk singer is known for devotional Chhat songs. For the 65-year-old singer, language is not a barrier as she sings in Maithli, Bhojpuri and Magahi. She is also known for her songs in Bollywood films, including Salman Khan-starrer Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989

(Medicine-Palliative Care) Known as the father of palliative care in India, he is the director of Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences and is one of the founders of Pain and Palliative Care Society in Calicut, which was later named as Institute of Palliative Medicine. His initiative has reached about 40% of patients who need palliative care in Kerala compared to the national average of less than 1%

LAKSHMIKUTTY

(Medicine - Traditional) The 75-year-old is known for her traditional healing techniques. A tribal poet, poison healer and teacher at Kerala Folklore Academy, Lakshmikutty lives in a tribal hamlet in Thiruvananthapuram’s Kallar and has pioneered traditional remedies for several ailments

(Art- Music) Better known as “Kannada Kabir”, the 77-year-old Sufi bhajan singer from north Karnataka’s Bagalkot is considered a mascot of Hindu-Muslim unity

SULAGITTI NARASAMMA

Working well into the twilight of her life, the 97-year-old is known for helping women deliver babies in rural Karnataka where medical facilities are almost missing. She comes from a family of farm labourers in Tumakuru district. She, as a teenager, first helped a woman deliver her baby. She does not charge money for her work

SITAVVA JODDATI: Initiated into the profession of Devadasis at the age of seven, the 60-year-old is considered the high priestess of women’s empowerment, especially Devadasis and dalits for the last three decades in Belagavi district.

As CEO of Mahila Abhivruddhi Mattu Samrakshana Samsthe, she provides legal aid and financial support to former Devadasis and Dalits

YESHI DHODEN: The 90-year-old is a Tibetan monk who was personal physician of the Dalai Lama. He is foremost expert of Sowa Rigpa, the Tibetan herbal medicine that combines ancient healing systems of India and China. People from across the globe visit his clinic in McLeodganj.

ABHAY AND RANI BANG: The Bang couple, who are in their late 60s and are recipients of several national and international awards, had formed an NGO, Society For Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), in the tribal district of Gadchiroli. Their path-breaking research for reducing infant mortality rate has been recognised by UNICEF and WHO and adopted in several countries

SAMPAT RAMTEKE (posthumous) Sampat Ramteke, who died in November, 2017, was the president of Sickle Cell Society of India (SCSI). Ramteke was 67. He worked for the cause of the sickle cell patients for three decades. The genetic blood disorder has a high presence in the Vidarbha region

The awardees from ASEAN countries

New Delhi: A novelty of this year's Padma awards list was Padma Shris being given to one person from [each of the] 10 Asean nations to mark 25 years of India's partnership with the southeast Asian grouping.

Malai Haji Abdullah Bin Malai Haji Othman of Brunei Darussalam got the award in the medicine category. He is the founder of the Society for Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (Smarter).

Hun Many of Cambodia, the son of former PM Hun Sen, was awarded for his role in public affairs. He is Cambodias youngest parliamentarian and president of Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia.

Indonesian sculptor and one of the pioneers of the New Art movement I Nyoman Nuarta was also awarded. He is known for works like Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue, devoted to Vishnu in Bali.

Bounlap Keokangna of Laos was another on the list. He was deputy director of Vat Phou World Heritage Site and had helped in restoration of the Shiva temple of Bhadreshwara, known as Vat Phou along with ASI.

Datuk Ramli Bin Ibraham of Malaysia is a classical Odissi dancer and has been teaching dance for over 40 years.He got the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2011 and runs Sutra Dance Theatre in Malaysia.

Among the others were Dr Thant Myint U of Myanmar, a historian and author;

Jose Ma Joey Concepcion III of the Philippines, CEO and president of RFM Corp;

Tommy Koh, ambassador in the ministry of foreign affairs, Singapore;

Somdet Phra Ariya Wongsa Khottayan, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand who trained as a monk at the age of 10; and

Nguyen Tien Thien, secretary general of National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
