In August 2019, a controversy broke out when the Boxing Federation of India stopped Nikhat from competing against Mary Kom at the selection trials for the World Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia. This paved the way for the six-time world champion’s automatic selection for the meet, where she went on to claim bronze. Nikhat, a former junior world champion, fought back, tweeting to sports minister Kiren Rijiju demanding a trial against Mary Kom to decide India’s representative for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifiers in the 51kg category. The trial between the two is now slated to be held in the last week of this month. | In August 2019, a controversy broke out when the Boxing Federation of India stopped Nikhat from competing against Mary Kom at the selection trials for the World Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
“Mary Kom’s asked me to talk less and prove myself in the ring, I think I’ll do just that,” says Nikhat, “What’s the use of spending an entire year in training, hopping from camp to camp, when you are eventually denied a rightful chance at a shot at the one thing we are all here for – the Tokyo Olympics? Mary Kom is an absolute legend, she was the reason I took up boxing but like it or not, this is also about my haq (right)."
