With the support of her mother and Nandini, a glossy women-oriented Assamese magazine, Shabnam became Miss North East.
Her mentor has been Maini Mahanta, editor of Nandini, who was one of the judges at the contest.
In 2001 Nibir got a portfolio made and sent it to Nandini, which published the photographs.
Conservative rural Assam was scandalised by the hints of skin in the photographs. However, her mother stood by her.
In 2003, Nibir joined the Assam School of Drama, Guwahati but did not complete the course.
She then hosted a TV show and was a ramp model.
For Femina Miss India 2006 Nibir was chosen from Assam and was to travel to Paris for the Grooming Round. However, she did not possess a passport then.
She then appeared on Doordarshan and in music videos.
Thereafter, Nibir set up a book publishing house.
APSC Recruitment Scam/ 2016

Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul, was arrested here in Nov 2016, allegedly engaged a number of persons for collecting bribes from candidates seeking government jobs through the APSC. The police arrested Paul on the basis of statements of as well as evidence collected from one Nabakanta Patir, who was arrested in Dibrugarh on October 27 for allegedly collecting Rs 10 lakh from a candidate on behalf of the APSC chairman.
Patir’s arrest led to the arrest of Mamud Ali Choudhury, PSO of APSC member Samedur Rahman, in Rangiya.
Rumours started that a model-turned-actress was involved in the APSC recruitment scam with many claiming that she played the role of a middleman in fixing deals has finally broken her silence. Nibir Shabnam, by now a prominent actress, claimed that she was in no way related to the scam and rejected reports that she played the part of a middleman in sealing deals.
There were reports about the involvement of a prominent actress in fixing deals although Nibir’s name had not figured publicly neither were cops preparing to question her in connection with the recruitment scam.
She, however, said that she knew the now absconding APSC member Samedur Rahman although it was not as a member of the commission.
“I knew Samedur Rahman but not as member of the APSC. We are artistes and as such maintain relations with various people,” Shabnam added.
Unhappy with her name being dragged into the controversy, the actress said she wants the probe to reach its logical conclusion so that her name gets cleared.
Reacting to reports of his alleged association with model-turned-actress Nibir Shabnam, the arrested APSC member Samedur Rahman said reports of him using Shabnam as a money collector is false and baseless.
“The reports are baseless. I have never used her as a money collector,” Rahman added.
