Value-added courses
SRCC: managing family business

The candidates applying at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) can, from this year, learn how to manage a family business or analyse big data if they opt for the college’s newly proposed value-added courses.
Delhi University college is also introducing Chinese, Japanese, French, German and Spanish under this project and plans to collaborate with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to expand its research base.
“The idea behind introducing new courses is to go beyond the curriculum as the student intake is also increasing from this year,” said SRCC principal Simrit Kaur. These courses — offering certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas — will add to the profile of a student, she added. “The courses will be open for outsiders as well. Even entrepreneurs who want to learn something new can enrol.”
The family business course will teach a student new ways of running such a setup, Kaur pointed out. “This involves the use of technology and bringing diversity to the business. They will be trained to incorporate management, marketing and human resource skills in a family business venture that usually runs on old school ideas.”
Another value-added course, entrepreneurship programme, will try to “push youths towards employment generation as not enough jobs are available to meet the demand. Through innovation, ideation and incubation of ideas, students can develop their own business,” Kaur said.
The big data analysis course, she added, will be essential to study complex data and will teach students to use Stata software or ‘R’ programming.
The principal told TOI that the college had already written to DU’s department of Germanic and Romance studies to start teaching German, French and Spanish and approached the department of East Asian studies for Japanese and Chinese. The college wants to “to give students a global perspective”, Kaur said. The college will focus on giving students real-life experiences through projects, lecture series and research.
“We are also the only undergraduate college that is collaborating with RBI in the area of applied microeconomics and our faculty members will visit Mumbai to teach RBI officials,” Kaur said.
Commerce

BCom (honours) is often the default choice for those taking the commerce stream. But students often wonder if it’s the best course and if it offers decent career opportunities. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most popular courses in Delhi university, with over 66,000 applying for about 5,500 seats across 54 colleges.
The curriculum is designed on CBCS pattern with 14 core subjects, two ‘ability enhancement’ papers, two ‘skill enhancement’ papers, and four generic elective papers from disciplines other than commerce to make it an interdisciplinary course besides two discipline-centric centric papers for specialisation in finance, marketing, HR, entrepreneurship and international business.
The papers such as computer applications in business, e-filing, and computerised accounting give adequate practical insights to the students.
Curriculum
The core papers on business laws, financial and management accounting, direct tax and GST, basic finance, marketing and HR cover important aspects of business processes. DU is among the first universities to introduce GST as a core paper. Corporate frauds such as those by Enron, Satyam, Kingfisher, Nirav Modi are adequately covered to give practical insights on how frauds occur and what mechanisms are to be adopted to prevent them.
The course is at present being revised modelled on an ‘outcome-based approach’ to match the ever-changing expectations of the industry.
Criteria
BCom (honours) requires a minimum of 50% marks in mathematics/business mathematics and at least 60% aggregate marks in the best of four subjects (including one language paper) in Class XII from any recognised board to be eligible to apply for it.
Career options
The career options are multiple.
It’s a gateway to pursuing chartered accountancy, company secretaryship, cost accountancy, etc. One may also opt for MBA, MS (finance) or MCom. Public service examinations are another option. BCom graduates are always in high demand as accountants, audit assistants, finance and banking executives, investment and tax associates at the junior and middle level. Many also become entrepreneurs.
