Landmark films

Deepika Padukone: Films that changed her life

Amann Khuranaa, The Times of India

Om Shanti Om: Deepika Padukone had a dream debut of sorts what with getting the opportunity to share screen space with the baadshah of Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan. To be in the same frame as Shah Rukh and getting it right is no child’s play but Deepika pulled it off with relative ease. As Deepika’s performance in the film garnered rave reviews, industry insiders had no doubt that the Bangalore girl will soon be among the most prominent actresses of tinsel town.

Love Aaj Kal: It was not a smooth ride for Deepika Padukone even after making a smashing debut with Om Shanti Om. The road to success was riddled with potholes and they came in form of Bachna Ae Haseeno and Chandni Chowk to China. But Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal that released in 2009, proved to be the game-changer. Luckily for Deepika, Love Aaj Kal came at a time when she desperately needed a hit. Also, under Imtiaz’s skillful direction, Deepika could prove her acting prowess.

Cocktail: No one would have thought that Deepika’s journey in films would become even tougher post Love Aaj Kal. But as fate would have it, the actress faced a series of flops in the following two years before Homi Adajania’s romantic comedy Cocktail happened in 2012. Deepika’s character of a carefree bird, Veronica, fetched her a volley of appreciation. A superhit at the box-office, Cocktail earned the leggy lass a huge number of fans. For Deepika, this ‘Cocktail’ was not about letting loose but gaining control of her film career.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani: Cast opposite her ex-boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is one of Deepika’s most remembered films till date. Playing a bespectacled girl who was studying to be a doctor, Deepika’s innocent portrayal was an ultimate treat for her fans. Deepika’s chemistry with Ranbir was unmatchable and the film managed to further cement the actress' position in the industry.

Chennai Express: Chennai Express was Deepika’s second film with Shah Rukh Khan after Om Shanti Om. Deepika’s flawless portrayal of a South Indian girl received accolades from critics as well as the audience. The manner in which she had picked up the accent of her character was something to look forward to, in Rohit Shetty’s romantic-action comedy. The film minted a whopping Rs 399 crore at the box-office and established Deepika as the new queen of Bollywood.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela: Fortunate are the ones who get a chance to work with a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Having proved her acting skills in various films, Deepika was chosen to play Leela in Bhansali’s ambitious project, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. While Deepika’s desi look was much appreciated, her performance too stumped everyone. Also, with the film, the actress proved her ability to fit into any kind of role.

Films she rejected

Deepika Padukone: Films she rejected

The Times of India

Actress Deepika Padukone says she has no qualms rejecting film offers that later went on to become blockbusters. Bollywood's Rs 100 crore heroine has always given preference to the script over other aspects of the film. However, there are few films TOI wishes Deepika Padukone wouldn't have turned down. Let's take a look at the films Deepika Padukone had rejected .

Shuddhi: Karan Johar's most-awaited project, Shuddhi. Social media went abuzz with news of Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan being a part of the project. Before Kareena, Deepika Padukone was offered the female lead in the film. However, due to personal commitments and date issues, Deepika chose Bajirao Mastani over Shuddhi. This also rubbed Karan Johar the wrong way.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Before Katrina Kaif, the role of Meera was offered to Deepika Padukone. But Deepika rejected the film and thus lost the chance to star in Yash Chopra's last film. Katrina Kaif fetched rave reviews for her performance in the film. The film also went on to become one of the highest-grossing films at the box-office.

Fast & Furious 7: Many actresses would have killed to be a part of the Fast & Furious 7 franchise and Deepika Padukone was the only actress in Bollywood, who was given an opportunity to star in a movie opposite Vin Diesel. But due to date issues, Deepika finally had to turn down the offer. Deepika was busy with the shoot of Goliyon Ki Raasleela - Ram Leela at that point of time.

Dhoom 3: Bollywood's biggest franchise film, Dhoom 3, had earlier been offered to Deepika Padukone. Katrina Kaif's role as 'Aaliya' had earlier been offered to Deepika. But again due to prior commitments, Deepika could not allot dates for the film. And thus, had to reject the offer.

Roy She may have given a number of hits with Ranbir Kapoor, but the leggy lass chose to turn down this film. Jacqueline Fernandez grabbed the role after Deepika turned it down. However, considering this could have been Deepika's first out-of-the-box role, TOI wondered if Deepika made the right decision.
