The Spanish dream is finally coming true for Brishti Bagchi. “Congratulations Brishti Bagchi for this incredible achievement! See you soon in Spain with Madrid Club de Futbol Femenino,” the official La Liga page posted with a picture of Bagchi, congratulating her on becoming the first Indian to play in the women’s football league in Spain. Bagchi will reach Madrid on August 5 and join the reserve team of Madrid CFF, which plays in the top division of Spanish women’s football league. The pre-season training begins on August 15.

Brishti trained for one month at the Madrid club last September and they were happy with her performance. “It was decided after my trials last year that I will be training with the reserve team to further develop tactically and eventually play with a contract. I am really excited and can’t wait to be there. It is definitely one of the biggest learning opportunities in my career,” said Bagchi, who represented the Karnataka in junior and senior nationals.

After finishing school, she went for trials in the USA and represented Oklahoma City Women’s football team in National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics league as a student-athlete. She has also played in the Indian Women’s League there.

The reserve teams of the top division of the women’s league in Spain play against each other and, based on performance, players get promoted to the first team. For the record, Madrid CFF finished 13th in the 2018-19 edition of the league.

There was also a crowd-funding initiative to help Brishti in her Mission Spain. “The crowd-funding did help me a bit,” said Bengaluru-born Brishti.
