Biography

Noted percussionist and New-age star, Bickram Ghosh is ranked amongst the greatest Tabla players of India. Equally brilliant within traditional as well as experimental genres, Bickram has carved out a unique niche for himself in his diverse avataars as classical musician, new – age artiste and composer. Son of the great Tabla maestro-Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Bickram has also learnt the nuances of Carnatic percussion from Pandit S. Sekhar. He performed for over a decade with the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar who honed his skills in the art of accompaniment.

He has over 75 recordings as Soloist, Composer and Collaborator,

He has performed in almost every top venue in the world, among which are The Royal Albert Hall, London; The Kennedy Centre, Washington D.C; The Palais De Beaux Arts, Brussels; Carnegie Hall, New York and many others. His performances have met with accolades in international circuits and his many associations with top western musicians such as George Harrison ( Bickram performed on the title track of Harrison’s posthumously released, Grammy nominated album ‘Brainwashed’), Mstilav Rostropovich, Khaled Kouen, Yosi Levi and others has placed him in the top rung of Indian musicians in the international arena. Bickram played on Grammy award winning album ’Full Circle’ along with Ravi Shankar.He has played on four Grammy Nominated albums so far.

Bickram is also one of the leading composers of India today. His highly acclaimed album Rhythmscape( which continues to be on the music store charts even ten years after release!) was followed up with successes like Folktail, Interface , Drum Invasion , Beyond Rhythmscape , The Kingdom of Rhythm with British multi-percussionist Pete Lockett, White Note, The award winning Electro-classical(Best fusion music album 2011, Big Star IMA award), The Legacy of Rhythm (Best percussion album 2011 Big Star IMA award) and most recently Tagore Lounge which is currently on Top of the charts in its Genre in every major store.

His film scoring too has received accolades all over. Bickram has composed for four Bollywood Hindi films and nine Bengali films. His most recent score for Sooni Taraporewala’s Bollywood film Little Zizou has established him as a composer par excellence’. He has many acclaimed Bengali films to his credit too . Bickram has scored for many documentaries as well amongst which is the National Award winning documentary on Maharashtra Tourism “Lost and Found”.

Bickram has collaborated with many singers on the Bollywood front as well. Among those who have sung for him are Sonu Niigaam, Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan, Kailash Kher , Shubha Mudgal, and many others.

He has also acted as the male lead in two Bengali films, one of which, Hothat Neerar Jonnyo was a runaway hit. He along with his wife Jaya Seal Ghosh, won the “Best on-screen couple Kalaakar award” of the year 2004 for the same film.

Bickram has teamed up with Bollywood’s leading singer Sonu Nigam to score for their first Hindi film as music director duo - Jal. The work is in progress. The duo are also working on a world music album tentatively titled “Heart and Beat.”
