Cong hopes dashed, cyber city decides to go with BJP again

Bangalore 2009, 2014

BJP has made a clean sweep of Bangalore win ning all three urban constituencies in a repeat of its 2009 performance. The results were a surprise as Congres was hoping to win a few. But the Modi wave that swept the state was evident in Bangalore as high-profile contestants like Congres's Nandan Nilekani lost by over 1.5 lakh votes to BJP's H N Ananthkumar. For the latter this was sixth consecutive win.

The biggest surprise was in Bangalore Central, which has a sizable minority vote. Rahul Gandhi's choice, local youth Congres chief Rizwan Arshad, was a hot favourite. The nomination was controversial as the party had denied ticket to veteran leader Jaffer Shareif to accommodate Arshad. A sulking Shareif not only quit the party but also flirted with the idea of joining the JD(S) before deciding to sit out. It was the closest fight in the city, with the sitting MP , BJP's P C Mohan, winning it by over 30,000 votes.

A Union minister prospect, former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda of BJP comfortably defeated Congres rival C Narayanaswamy in Bangalore North by over a lakh votes. This is a personal setback for chief minister Siddaramaiah as Narayanaswamy was his candidate and a winner in the primary .

AAP , which got a lot of attention, especially after fielding former Infosys CFO V Balakrishnana from Bangalore Central, drew a blank.

This result is a definite loss of face for Congres, especially to the chief minister.
