Her career, her films

2005-2007

2005: Anushka debuted in Super, with major Telugu leading man Akkineni Nagarjuna. Director Puri Jagannadh happened to see Anushka through another director and she got selected for “Super.” Hindi-Urdu actress Ayesha Takia was the other female lead. Sandeep Chowta’s Music was nominated for the Filmfare Best Music Director Award; the songs were major hits.

Anushka excelled as Sasha, who is madly in love with her girlfriend’s brother, Akhil, an unemployed youth. Now Akhil does not have any romantic feelings for Sasha. He thinks of her only as a friend. The film flopped but Anushka got noticed in this role about unrequited love. She was offered more leading assignments.

She performed the role of Sasha beautifully, who is madly in love with the unemployed hero Akhil, played by Nagarjuna. He doesn't have any romantic feelings for Sasha, his sister's friend, and treats her only as a friend.

Though this was Anushka’s debut film, she was paid Rs20 lakh, which was good by any standards.

2005: She also did ‘Mahanandi’ but the film did not do well at the box office.

2006 was a very productive year for Shetty. She had four releases.

‘Vikramarkudu’ (dir S.S. Rajamouli; music by MM Keeravani): Shetty played Neeraja Goswami. The film saw her acting skills being praised by the critics. Leading man Ravi Teja for the first time acted in a double role: he played a petty thief as well as a police officer. The film was a mega hit. With this film Anushka became one of the biggest Telugu stars: the film got her commercial success as well as critical acclaim. The film was remade in Malayalam as Vikramathithya.

Vikramarkudu was to have been remade in Tamil as ‘Siruthai,’ and to be directed by Suraj. Anushka was to have been the lady love of Karthik Shivakumar. Yuvan Shankar Raja was to have scored the music for the film. However, producers Studio Green dropped the project. They revived it in 2010 with Siva as director and Tamannah as heroine.

2006: Asthram (a remake of the successful Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Sarfarosh’)

2006: ‘Rendu’ (dir: Sundar C), opposite R. Madhavan, was her debut film in Tamil. It was a mild success but not a hit.

2006: Anushka had a special guest appearance in ‘Stalin,’ which saw the directorial debut of A.R. Murugadoss, who went on to become a major director in the Tamil industry

2007: Lakshyam was the no.1 Telugu hit of the year. It was Srivasu’s first film as director and Tottempudi Gopichand played the hero. Anushka was praised for her acting as a cheerful college student who teases the hero outside her home, but is a sensitive girl at home.

2007 ‘Don’ was a very prestigious project for writer, director, choreographer and music director Raghava Lawrence. Once again, Shetty played the main lead opposite Nagarjuna and won acclaim. The film was dubbed into Malayalam as Bhai and into Hindi as Don No. 1. Raghava Lawrence himself d the film and also made his debut as a.

2008: six releases

2008 saw Anushka’s career reach new heights with six releases.

‘Okka Magaadu’: Anushka’s performance as a glamour girl was appreciated. In the film she also sang a song (Ammatho), in her own voice, with Naveen. She played one of three female leads.

Swagatam (dir: Dasaradh) was a big-budget film (with Jagapathi Babu as the hero and Bhumika Chawla as Anushka’s rival in love). Anushka played Shailu, an irritable businesswoman who falls in love with a widower who helps her find new meaning in life. The film was not a commercial success. However, it was received very well by the critics—who praised Dasaradh, Jagapathi Babu and Bhoomika. The film did nothing for Shetty—except for getting her poor reviews.

Chintakayala Ravi (dir Yogesh) was a comedy and Shetty, who played Sunitha, was one of the two leading ladies. Much of the film was shot in the USA and Vishal-Shekhar (major composers from Hindi-Urdu cinema) composed the hit music.

Baladhoor (with Ravi Teja), too, was neither a commercial nor a critical success. Anushka slimmed down for the film, and the director and choreographer of the film thought that if she showed skin the film would be a success. However, the film had a clichéd story, bad direction, lifeless music--and high expectations on the part of the audience, from both Anushka, by then a major star, and Ravi Teja, who had never before delivered such a flop. Anushka’s cheesecake could not attract audiences.

‘Souryam’ (hero: Tottempudi Gopichand) did very well but was not as successful as their previous, Lakshyam.

‘Arundhati’ (directed by Kodi Ramakrishna; produced by M Shyama Prasad Reddy) was a mega hit and changed Anushka’s career forever. She had the double roles of Arundhati and Jejamma in this heroine-oriented fantasy film. More than the title role, it was her performance as Jejamma that got her rave reviews and Awards. The critics hailed a new acting talent. Many major awards came her way. Graphics by Rahul Nambiar left Indian audiences impressed; they had rarely seen technical excellence. Together all this made the film a hit and took Shetty’s career to the very top.

Anushka was now getting Rs.1 crore per film, and acting opposite superstars. She was already one of the highest paid South Indian actresses.

‘Billa’ too received commercial and critical success. Her sizzling performance outshone the ‘buxom bombshell’ Namitha, the other heroine of the film. Anushka was now a ‘bankable’ star. She could effortlessly fit into big- budget as well as serious films.

Anushka’s popularity vis-à-vis other leading ladies was getting embarrassing fortheir hosts. Around this time Anushka and Namitha appeared together on a TV show. Most callers to the TV station wanted to talk to Anushka rather than Namitha. This is said to have got Namitha worried, and she started working on reducing her waistline.

2009-2010

2009: ‘Vettaikkaran’ (prod: AVM Balasubramanian; dir: Babu Sivan) was her second Tamil film; she was paired with the successful Tamil star Ilayathalapathy Vijay. She played a medical student. Tamannaah Bhatia was the other heroine.

2010: This year, too, Anushka had major success.

‘Singam’ (Tamil), opposite Suriya, was the biggest commercial success of the year. The film cemented her position in Tamil cinema.

Vedam: Anushka Shetty played Saroja, a prostitute. Such roles normally bring acting awards, and Shetty got her second Filmfare Award as well as another CineMAA Award.

Panchakshari (Telugu), another heroine-centric film in which she had a double-role.

Khaleja: Anushka’s performance was appreciated.

Ragada: Anushka’s performance was appreciated.

2011-13

2011 Vaanam was another film that brought in commercial success as well as critical praise.

Deiva Thirumagal was a major hit.

By now Anushka had become a major name in Tamil films as well. She started receiving offers for some of the biggest-budget films being made. A.R. Murugadoss cast her in his next film opposite Vijay.

Then she signed two major Tamil films – Irandam Ulagam (opposite Arya) and an action film with Karthi (she kept the name a secret). In November 2011 she started working in the Tamil ‘Thaandavam’. Two Telugu films followed– Damarukam and Rampachodavaram.

Surprisingly she opted out of Bala Krishna’s ‘ Okka Magadu’ for ‘personal reasons.’

2013: Mirchi (Telugu/ writer, director: Koratala Siva) was an action-romantic film. Anushka played a village girl called Vennela opposite Prabhas. Richa Gangopadhyay was the other female lead. The film was appreciated by critics and did very well at the box office.

2014

PETA

Anushka sent messages on Twitter to highlight the plight of Mumbai's Victoria horses. She did this to support the campaign of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

Lingaa (2014)

Anushka played the lead in the trilingual Lingaa, the biggest blockbuster from South India till then. The film set new box office records in Chennai city,Tamil Nadu and the USA but did not do as well in AP-Nizam or Kerala. Lingaa (2014) , the most eagerly awaited Tamil film till then, was a success and rewrote some commercial records in TN. However, there were comments about whether there was any chemistry at all between her and leading man, megastar Rajinikanth.

2015

Rudhramadevi

Bilingual Rudhramadevi is a historical drama that also stars Allu Arjun, Rana Daggubati, , Nithya Menon, Catherine Tresa and Aditi Chegappa. Anushka Shetty plays the title role of Rudhramadevi: the warrior queen , a legendary 13th century princess of the Kakatiya dynasty. Her regal look as a queen has been greatly appreciated and has gone viral.

Playing a sword-wielding warrior came at a price. The actress 'suffered a hairline fracture while filming for the climax episode' of the period drama and shot for around 10 days through intense pain, while refusing a body double.

The actress shot with five rolls of skin-coloured bandage on her wrist and took pain-killer injections to complete the shoot on time. Her commitment has left the whole film unit in awe. The Times of India

Anushka Shetty, who looked somewhat plump in Singam 2 lost around 12 kg, and went on a special diet and fitness regime. She was required to look toned. The Times of India

Rudhramadevi is the first Telugu periodical film releasing in 3D. 3D post production, special visual effects and graphics delayed the release of the film somewhat. The movie is scheduled to release around Sankranthi, 2015. FilmiBeat

Bahubali: The Beginning (2015)

Baahubali (dir: S. S. Rajamouli; prod: Shobu Yarlagadda, Prasad Devineni; banner: Arka Media Works), a period film, is being trotted as the biggest-budget (Rs. 100 crore) Telugu film ever. (It was released in three languages.) Anushka plays Devasena, opposite Prabhas. (Tamanna Bhatia plays Avanthika and, reportedly, will form a second romantic couple with Rana Daggubatti; Ramya Krishnan is also in the cast.) Some media have claimed that the film’s budget is Rs175 crore. Rubbish. Even a Hindi-Urdu superhit will find it difficult to recover that kind of money. The Rs.100-crore Lingaa (2014), which stars the biggest Indian star of the moment, struggled to recover the Rs.120 crore that it was sold at.

The first part of the film was released all over India in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu in 2015. The Times of India gave it 3.5 stars.

Hindi-Urdu films?

With luck, director E Niwas might start shooting with Anushka for the multi-starrer "Juvenile" in January 2015. E Niwas has reportedly said, "I have narrated the script to Anushka and she has liked it, but it's in a very initial stage right now. Neither we have confirmed anything nor have we got a confirmation from her end". (From Filmy Folks)

Kannada cinema?

Though she belongs to Karnataka, Anushka Shetty has never acted in a Kannada film. Not that there has been a shortage of offers, including one opposite Darshan, which she declined saying that she did have the required dates.

Writer, director Manju Mandavya has offered her the female lead role in "Masterpiece" opposite the very successful Yash. If Anushka declines they will probably opt for Priya Anand

Yennai Arindhaal.../ Yentha Vaadu Gannie

Writer, director Gautham Menon has managed to create a buzz around his Tamil drama film, produced by A. M. Rathnam, by keeping details about the film, including its shooting, secret. Shooting began in April 2014, some of it at a secret location at which only essential crew such as the cameraman and some light men were allowed. Such restrictions on location have always in the past led to rumours that ‘some intimate scenes [are] being shot.’ They did this time as well. Filmy Folks)

It was first said that the film was called Sathya. The title Aayiram Thottakal was also considered. Then fans of leading man Ajith started calling it Thala 55. Behind Woods, whose readers voted it the 2nd Most Anticipated Film Of 2014, simply calls it the Ajith - Gautham Menon Project. The two men are called the most promising duo of Tamil industry because of their track record. (In the even it was not released in 2014. Pongal 2015 is now being talked about as the likely date.)

Yennai Arindhaal.... seems to be the final Tamil title.

Anushka plays an IT professional in the film Trisha Krishnan is among the other stars of the film and music is by Harris Jayaraj.

Size Zero/ Inji Iduppazhagi

In her 2015 movie, Anushka played the role of a size 12 girl who is quite confident in her style but is unable to find love. For a person who practices Yoga, this role is quite an achievement. Pinkvilla adds: The story of Size Zero was around multiple myths about over weighed women. The film was a decent success but Anushka’s dedication to gain weight and then lose it again put her at the top of the list

Why every woman wants to be Devasena

Karthika Raveendran | 5 reasons why every girl wants to be Devasena from Baahubali 2, thanks to Anushka Shetty | April 29, 2017| Bollywood Life

Anushka Shetty bowled us over with her powerful performance as Devasena in Bahubali 2.

Here’s why every woman wants to be Devasena.

Unapologetic about being herself – She says what she wants to and says it well. It may sting, but she cares two hoots. She believes in speaking the truth and that’s what is most important to her.

Brave and Gutsy – (SPOILER) When her Kuntala Kingdom was attacked, she woke up with a start, but she didn’t cry out for help. Instead she prepared herself and carried her quiver of arrows and bow. Even when her chariot was attacked, she drew out her sword to kill all of them herself. She doesn’t need anybody’s help!

Confidence – (SPOILER) When the Mahishmati Kingdom sent her a world of wealth, she wasn’t too impressed. Instead sent them a fitting reply. Even when she was accused cutting of a the warrior’s fingers, she didn’t bat an eyelid when she was asked why she did so. That scene where she walks with Amarendra to get to the boat. Couldn’t help but applaud her swag! There is an air of surety around her that you want to imbibe yourself.

Feminine yet strong – She sets the perfect example of a feminine woman with a mind of her own. Just because she’s feminine, doesn’t mean she’s delicate! Beneath all that stunning beauty, lies a woman you dare not mess with.

She gets to be marry Amarendra – Of course we want to be Devasena if we can get to marry Amarendra Bahubali – the epitome of royalty, strength and humility!

Baahubali 2 makers had to edit out parts due to Anushka Shetty’s weight issues? | Mar 29, 2017| DECCAN CHRONICLE

Anushka Shetty had gained so much weight that the team of editors had to use their snipping tools to camouflage it.

A well placed source told DECCAN CHRONICLE that Anushka was refraining from making promotional appearances for the film as much as she can in order to divert attention from her weight gain. In fact, the actress skipped the trailer launch of the film held in Mumbai.

Acting her age (and weight) but not getting away with it

Sowmya Rajendran| Why is it so hard for critics and fans to stomach Anushka Shetty looking her age in 'Singam 3'? | February 13, 2017| The News Minute

Comments like Anushka looks 'too mature' and 'too old' have made their way to many reviews and discussions.

The third film in the Singam franchise: Anushka has been part of the franchise since the first film, which released in 2010. Her role has been progressively diminishing since the first Singam and she appears only for a handful of scenes in the most recent outing.

However, many critics have been quick to point out that she looks "too mature", "too old" and even "too fat" or "too bloated" to appear alongside Suriya. At 35, Anushka is one of the few heroines in the Southern industry who still gets to play meaty roles. Since her debut in 2005, she has done a slew of characters, even shouldering films entirely by herself - something not many heroines get to do.

Given the extremely short shelf life that heroines have in the industry when compared to their male counterparts, what Anushka has managed to do is remarkable.

And she has done it because she is a talented and dependable performer. For her film Inji Iduppazhagi (Size Zero in Telugu), which is on the weight loss industry, she took the risk of piling on kilos - nearly 20 kgs - to look the part.

What's more, Anushka has reportedly chosen to lose the weight through natural means without going in for steroids and other shortcut methods (which was the whole point of Inji Iduppazhagi anyway) which are the go-to methods in the film industry.

The response to Anushka's appearance in Si 3 is the reason why more heroines don't take such risks.

A break after Bhagmati?

Aneesh K Mathew| Anushka Shetty to take a break after her next project Bhagmati | Apr 25, 2017| Mathrubhumi

After five years of continuous work, Anushka Shetty is planning to take a break from movies to spend some time with family.

She has been flying from shooting sets to shooting sets for the past five years and could not take time off for any personal needs, the actress said.

During this period, she worked for Rudhramadevi, Inji Idupazhagi and Baahubali sequels. For Inji Idupazhagi, she increased her weight upto 80 kg but then had to go for intense workouts for Baahubali as her character in this movie demanded a slim figure. Anushka said she also feels like taking some rest after such hectic work schedule

Marriage

Anushka getting married after Mahaabali

Janani Karthik,TNN | Sep 17, 2014 The Times of India

The Times of India has it on good authority that in 2014 a debutant director met Anushka at the shooting spot of Lingaa (2014) and narrated to her a script. The script was a heroine-centric one, and Anushka loved it. And yet, she did not accept the offer. The reason she gave the director was not the usual one actors dish out of not having dates. In this case, the actress reportedly refused the offer as she's getting married after the shoot of Mahaabali [perhaps Baahubali is meant, both times] and has no plans to work on any film after marriage.

A source in the know says, "It was only because of her marriage plans that she politely declined to work in this film, though she liked the director's script very much. Anushka will be settling down after her shoot for Rajamouli's film is over."

Anushka's husband-to-be, apparently, is not from the film industry, but a businessman. The actress was in 2014 working on Lingaa (2014) with Rajinikanth, Mahaabali and Rudhramadevi.

Retirement in 2015-16?

In an article headlined ‘Anushka’s retirement time confirmed!’ Celeb Explore added, ‘Actress Anushka shetty is already 35 years old [33, actually, in Dec 14 when the article was written] now and she is now preferring to settle down by getting married. It is very widely publicised that Anushka is looking for a US based Businessman and wants to settle down with him after marriage in USA [and after her] high expectational [much anticipated] projects are completed by the end of the year 2015.’
