Mantra for change

“One fourth of teachers don’t go to school. We must discipline them.”

Urdu poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Ahmed Faraz.

Having taught at DU for two years, Anil Bordia made it to the Rajasthan cadre of the IAS in 1957, spending 35 years there, before retiring as the education secretary to the Government of India.

Post retirement, he launched the Lok Jumbish project in 1992 in Rajasthan for grassroots education, but the state Government abandoned the project seven years later under controversial circumstances.

Even this could not put an end to his endeavours to educate the rural poor. In 2001, Bordia conceptualised Doosra Dashak, a programme to educate school dropouts between 11 and 20 years of age. So far, 20,000 children have benefited from it.
