Different league

Recently wrote the preface to Girish Karnad’s The Wedding Album which involved self-introspection, very different from her academic writing. Research and teaching is the academic’s activism, a way to intervene in the world. This is what defines Amrit Srinivasan, whether it is by encouraging

IIT’s technical brains to look at a world beyond the sciences and engage with society or heading Paedia, a non-profit virtual archiving initiative to document the knowledge and practices of the people in India.

“It’s about giving students an education, not a technique,” she says. That is why Srinivasan also has had engineering students who have gone on to do a Ph.D in sociology. There needs, she says, to be more activism in changing our curriculum that would enable students to take a mix of disciplines.
