At CSEC, when not in class. The University Coffee House was another favourite but that doesn’t exist anymore.

It was the dismal state of science education at the university and school levels that propelled the Delhi University to establish the Centre for Science Education and Communication (CSEC) in 1986. Amitabha Mukherjee, like many others, joined CSEC as a volunteer to promote the teaching of science through practice rather than theory.

Today as director of CSEC, he has provided a platform for innovation in science, mathematics and other subjects. Whether it is facing off with Yashpal on Doordarshan’s erstwhile science show Turning Point, collaborating with the NGO Eklavya to create a new framework for high school science, radically restructuring the science undergraduate curriculum or working on textbooks for SCERT Delhi and NCERT, Mukherjee has made science education his constant companion.
