Skills, dodges, feints, dribbles... Shahid had every trick in the book to confound the defenders. The fans came in numbers in the 80s not to watch hockey but to witness Shahid's wizardry. He was an artist who used his hockey stick as a paint brush. His style of play was based on speed and an ability to dribble the ball. Unlike Dhyanchand, his role was not to score goals but to create them.

He used the dribbles, angles and dodges to invariably draw the whole defence towards him. The rest of the forwards only waited for a through ball. And he never disappointed them.Ironic then that he would score the goal which would help India win the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He then went on to help India win silver at the 1982 Asian Games and bronze at the 1986 Asian Games before walking into the sunset.
