Normally Indpaedia creates pages about the performance of Malayalam films in a particular year in January or February of the next year because the final box office figures arrive only by then. However, 2024 has been historic because no matter what happens in the rest of the year by Feb- March we had already seen three of the biggest commercial hits in the history of Malayalam cinema.

Jan- March: Commercially speaking, a historic quarter
Malayalam cinema soared in Q1 2024, raking in over Rs 670 crore worldwide. Three standout releases — "Manjummel Boys," "Aadujeevitham," and "Premalu" — secured top spots in the list of all-time highest-grossing Malayalam films, ranking 1st, 4th, and 5th, respectively.
Despite triumphs like "Manjummel Boys," "Aadujeevitham," "Premalu," and "Bramayugam," 2024 also witnessed its fair share of disappointments with films such as "Abraham Ozler," "Vivekanandan Viralanu," "Thundu," and "Thankamani."
Malayalam cinema faced a bleak outlook in 2023, with losses amounting to approximately Rs 300 crore, attributed to a dearth of quality content and lackluster performances at the box office.
However, the industry saw a promising start in January 2024 with the release of "Aattam," setting a high standard for the year. Subsequent releases like "Abraham Ozler" and "Malaikottai Vaaliban" injected hope into the industry, although the latter failed to meet expectations, signaling potential challenges ahead.
February witnessed the release of notable films like "Anweshippin Kandethum" and "Premalu," the latter emerging as a blockbuster hit, garnering praise for its storytelling and performances. Mammootty's "Bramayugam" further added to the industry's success, receiving acclaim and grossing around Rs 85 crore globally.
