Small sats to Mars, IIST working on 70 projects

Thiruvananthapuram : Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), a deemed university under the department of space , has at least 70 research projects being carried out by its students and faculty as of today.
These projects are underway either in collaboration with different Isro centres, or through external funding from organizations like the department of science and technology (DST), department of biotechnology (DBT), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Max Planck Institute, among others.


S Unnikrishnan Nair, director of IIST, told TOIduring an exclusive visit: “We host specialized research labs like the Small-spacecraft Systems and PAyload CEntre (SSPACE), systems and networks lab, Advanced Propulsion and Laser Diagnostics (APLD) facility, gas and bioSensor lab, experimental composite micromechanics lab, among others.”


SSPACE has demonstrated technology through satellites like the student-built INSPIRESat-1 and payload PILOT for PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM), while students are also working on payloads for Gaganyaan and future Mars, Venus missions.


“Ground-breaking experiments are also being planned under the IIST Hybrid Rocket Experiments (IHRX) programme to enable students to work on reusable launch vehicle tech nologies,” Professor Aravind Vaidyanathan told TOI.


Professor Umesh R Kadhane from the department of physics said that his students have been doing hands-on research like building complete testing facilities indigenously.


Unnikrishnan Nair said their achievements are reflected in research output — around 300 annual publications in top journals and authorship of acclaimed books in Springer, Elsevier.


On the global collaboration front, IIST has partnerships with institutions like Delft Technical University, Netherlands; University of Colorado, US; University of Cambridge, UK; Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Germany; Nanyang Technical University, Singapore; National Central University, Taiwan, among others. 
In its bid to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem, IIST’s Space Technology Innovation and Incubation Cell has helped five startups take shape, delivering projects for organizations like NABARD, IIT-Jammu, and Isro.
